About this deal

A lot of time the synthetic version of a weave is harder to work with than the natural version and I think you can really see how this is true with the side by side comparison included in the book. One thing to note which isn't a negative, just a heads up, this book is British and as such, many of the fabric names have slightly different spellings and in one or two instances a different name. This is a swatch book so, apart from descriptions of fabrics and comparisons, it contains many swatches of many types of fabric.

The author of the book Susan Carlson is the best in her industry and will help you keep your swatches organized, choose the perfect combo and hue, and keep track of what you already have and might need. Laurence King, the publisher, is extending a 35% discount to all Fashion-Incubator readers (but sure, you can pass the code around) on this title.

The part that I also enjoyed was the fact that the authors included a few samples of different cotton blends. One author, Hallett, previously worked at the London College of Fashion at Northumbria University, while Johnston still teaches there. What the book is: A ring bound hardcover book drilled down to 87 pages with the most essential information. As you can see from the table of contents, these two books really are meant to work together as companions and that's definitely something they've done well.

The book begins in the first section by explaining some of the processes used to turn fibers into yarn and fabrics, explaining different types of weaves types of weaves, touching on the differences between wovens vs knits, and more. Clive Hallett has worked in the fashion industry since 1972 and has been a design consultant since 1978. You would create your color theme based on your design style and hues and your art supplies helping you to see the color quality of your art and design. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In this fabric swatch, the author has provided over 48 color blank boxes per page for you to swatch out your markers, colored pencils, and pens to match the art sets. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Most pages seem to consist of a dense wall of text with black and white grainy photos taken in the 1970’s. The most successful fashion designers are those who truly understand their materials, who match design skill with technical knowledge. I just thought it was a bit odd that Tencel was omitted when Modal (another brand name) was included and they’re made by the same firm (Lenzing). The last section of this book displays a step-by-step process on the working techniques behind modern and classic fabric manufacturing. One thing that the authors/publishers might consider is using a piece of layover plastic on top of the samples. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Other reviewers also complained about some of the fabric samples missing, but the book that I received was covered completely in plastic, so this wasn’t an issue for me. It has over 120 swatches of fabrics such as kinds of cotton, silks, wools, linens, and also synthetic fabrics like nylon, soya fabrics, microfibers, and fabrics made from alternative plant fibers like bamboo and hemp. This updated version of the bestselling Fabric for Fashion: The Swatch Book, includes additional swatches, new close-up photography to show fabrication, yarn windings as well as finished fabric swatches and more! Amanda Johnston has worked as a freelance design consultant since 1982 and currently teaches at London College of Fashion. I am lucky enough to have a first edition of this book, so I don’t need to be in the drawing, but I want to say that I love having it on hand and have used it countless times to check the difference of fabrics.
