About this deal

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! Best method: Use a pair of calipers to directly measure the diameter or take your bike to the local bike shop and they will be able to measure it for you. Suspension stems are nothing new. You might have seen them on rigid mountain bikes in the mid-1990s before suspension forks really took hold. In the drops, with more weight forward, under hard pedalling efforts you can feel the bar give forwards, but it's a small movement and doesn't detract or distract from getting on with the effort. Developed together with Redshift, you get the same tunable ride feel with two of 5 different interchangeable elastomers inserted into the stem to suit rider weight or riding style preference.degree in 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120mm lengths (in both standard 1 1/8" steerer and the non-standard oversized 1 1/4" steerer which matches most Canyon and some Giant bikes) All Redshift Sports components are tested to the latest ISO 4210 standard for Racing Bicycles. These standards typically specify "Static Strength" tests (i.e. one-time application of force) as well as "Fatigue" tests (i.e. repeated application of force) for different bicycle components. Redshift Sports also run our own independent tests to better understand lifespan which typically involve cycling well beyond the specifications in the ISO 4210 standard. BMC’s solution though is a bit wider and boxier for improved stiffness, spins on wide-set sealed bearings, and also includes BMC’s integrated faceplate GPS/GoPro out front mount.

degree in 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120mm lengths (in both standard 1 1/8" steerer and oversized 1 1/4" steerer) With rigid gravel bikes gaining in popularity, bike and component manufacturers are currently finding ways to add minimally-damped suspension to our bikes to make them both more comfortable and faster (I will be making my case for increased speed in an upcoming resource). The Cane Creek eeSilk suspension seatpost that I use on my touring bike. While testing, I would go as far as to say that the stem has transformed the gravel bike and comfort offered when ridden on typical British terrain. Redshift suggests that riders up to 80kg should only use the main spring and those from 90kg to 110kg must install the inner spring as well. With the main spring fitted, my unit weighed 538g.For looks, quality and attention to detail I will give the stem 9.5 out of 10 (.5 lost for the boxy look) Installation was very easy, if you can fit a normal stem then the only thing to think about are the elastomers, I’m 70kg so went for the blue/orange set up which was already fitted. The instructions are very clear, in fact pretty much idiot proof so long as you read them properly (RTFI) Read The Flippin Instructions. Cane Creek has just released a new model called the eeSilk+, which has about twice the suspension travel (35mm). Being elastomer-based, you get the advantage of it feeling quite ‘muted’ on smooth surfaces, but with the boost in travel, the eeSilk+ can isolate your body from even bigger holes and depressions. The gel bartape comparison is not applicable - gel bar tape compresses by maybe a mm and damps higher-frequency vibration, the stem shifts 20mm to smooth out bigger hits. You can measure the length of your existing stem as shown in the following picture. The length is measured from the center of the handlebar to the center of the steerer tube.

You may choose to restrict the collection or use of your personal information in the following ways: There’s one caveat here, as it’s not just rider weight that affects the stem tuning here; rider position is also important. Riders running longer and/or lower handlebar setups will have their weight further away from the stem pivot, and will therefore need a firmer elastomer than someone with a shorter and/or higher one. For me, I’m running a moderately aggressive setup with about 7 cm of bar drop on a 100 mm stem and a handlebar with 85 mm of reach, so keep that in mind. The aluminum forgings promise very good fatigue life. Its two-bolt saddle clamp remains level atop a parallelogram linkage pivoting on dry-lube bushings. When weight is added to the post a link compresses the internal spring(s), creating user-adjustable sag, which Redshift recommends should be around 20 per cent of the 35mm total travel.

Easton EA90 SL stem

It worked well, and achieved the technical goals Cane Creek had set out for the most part, but there were two main downsides. One was more behind-the-scenes: the intricate design was apparently just too expensive to produce in mass quantities. But the other was arguably more damning: it was just too ugly. With the knowledge that my tyre volume and pressure could cope with the sort of impacts I normally try to avoid, I steered towards the roughest patches of tarmac, potholes, ancient cobbles and uneven gravel.

The stem came with the elastomers fitted for a 6 deg rise, to reverse and get a 6 deg drop you also need to move the elastomers to the top, no big deal and this is made very clear in the instructions. Also fitting the stem to the bike before playing with the elastomers was made clear and made it very easy to refit the wedge. With comfort, speed and health in mind, let’s take a look at the suspension stems, seatposts and handlebars that have been released in the last year. The other main option to compare against would be an increased tyre size, which can also increase comfort when set at suitable pressures. Still, while this can be advantageous, it can also have downsides, such as slower rolling resistance in some cases and frame clearance in most gravel bikes. The ICS MTT x Redshift Stem is catered to a broad range of users, from Gravel to All-Road and Endurance, without forgetting Fitness and Urban riders that prefer flat handlebars. The ICS MTT x Redshift Suspension Stem provides a wide range of direct benefits to the riding experience: So here goes, having made the decision to buy the stem I could be a little bias so I’m going to be deliberately critical to ensure you all get a good balanced idea.
