The game starts with your explorers scattered across the landscape of Atlantis and the aim is to get the explorers back to dry land before they get lost at sea. The island is surrounded by open water, and in each of the four corners of the board are four coral islands. The fun with removing the terrain tiles is that you get to scupper your opponents’ plans by landing their meeples in the water by removing a tile they were standing on.

After a quick read of the finer details, you are pretty much ready to dive straight in (pardon the pun).Once everyone is either on and island or dead, the player with the most people is declared the winner, and everyone forgets about the sunken city and goes home to Athens, for a good old fashioned orgy, or something like that. Each piece of island has a symbol on the underside representing one of the following; A whirlpool which sucks everything on adjacent spaces (that aren’t land pieces or on land pieces) in and destroys them, a sea monster, a shark, an octopus, a dolphin or a boat; these are all created on the uncovered sea space.

Escape from Atlantis – 30th anniversary Edition with revised rules and a slightly altered theme involving the explorers actually finding Atlantis and then having to escape from it. You try to remember where the next highest value meeple is, but will find it hard to keep track, as there is so much happening as another player takes their turn. For context, hot songs of the era were ‘Physical’ by Olivia Newton-John and ‘Don’t You Want Me’ by The Human League… Woah, wa-wa-woah – wait, come back!Bitter tears of frustration were stinging her eyes as she sat down at the pointed front end of the boat with her legs dangling over the side. You could move one of your land-based meeples, you could move a boat, you could even move one of your less fortunate meeples stranded in the sea. They are sailing with Riley's Dad and Alfie's Mum whale watching when they are cuaght in a storm that wrecks their boat.
