Book review: Coffin Road by Peter May - Debbish Book review: Coffin Road by Peter May - Debbish

But when the other person has lost their memory and doesn’t know you, then in a way you’ve totally lost touch with them and you don’t know them anymore either. In conclusion, if eco-thrillers appeal and you like Peter May's writing then Coffin Road makes for a decent yarn, with a very effective sense of place and a coherent storyline, but it is rather haphazard, as May doesn't even begin to tie up how the stories relate until almost a third of the way through the book. And then of course when she discovers that he’s got the memory loss, it’s almost then a reverse situation, it’s like being with a stranger. This murder mystery series takes place on the Isle of Lewis where life is unforgiving and the fear of God is apparent. Being a fan of the unreliable narrator when done well, I think May pulls it off quite well with the amnesia being the vehicle of unreliability. Corporate greed and intrigue are at the heart of this novel, and the only thing standing between the final destruction of the bees is a man with no memory of what he knows. From this bare premise May conjures a clever, twisty eco-thriller in the mode of Le Carré’s The Constant Gardener. There are alternating narrators, with George Gunn and Karen Fleming taking their minor turns, but it is through Neal that readers must try to make sense of most of the twists and turns. In 1996, Machair was nominated for the Best Drama Serial Award at the 17th International Celtic Film and Television Festival. What was it like working with him on a subject that he’s obviously so invested in and passionate about?Gripping and intense with a fast paced and definitely intriguing plot, I was fascinated by the storyline. My partner had been trying to get me to read John Banville for his very descriptive writing and I finally did read 3 of them. And so he was a great guy, and I met up with him and his wife in the summer actually after I’d written the book. Come mai non ricorda nulla del suo passato da quando si è riavuto su una spiaggia sulla quale la burrasca lo ha scaraventato?
