Frits breaks in to professor Waldman’s classroom and, after breaking a jar containing a perfectly normal brain, steals a jar containing the brain of a criminal. The villagers had enjoyed many years of peace without anyone invoking the hated family name, and they wished it to remain so. And yes, poor Robert Florey, too, would soon find himself replaced; certainly not through any fault of his own, whose enthusiasm for the project is well-documented, but simply because another director was, at the time, more in favour on the Universal lot.

The aim of these experiments, Waldman reveals, was to create human life… The three decide to see Frankenstein at the ruined watchtower in which he has built his laboratory. Other versions of Shelley's novel include The Curse of Frankenstein, produced in England in 1957 and directed by Terence Young; a 1973 made-for-television version, Frankenstein: The True Story, directed by Jack Smight; and Mel Brooks' 1974 spoof of the early Universal films, Young Frankenstein. As Waldman and his former student argue their respective viewpoints, Frankenstein makes an emotional attempt to express the yearning for knowledge that has led him to this juncture, demanding of Waldman whether he has never wanted to, “Do something dangerous”; to, “Look beyond the clouds and the stars”; to discover, “What causes the trees to bud, or what changes the darkness into light”? In the 2007 film Frankenstein, Andrew Waldman (portrayed by Neil Pearson) is the friend and colleague of Victoria Frankenstein who helps to oversee the Universal Xenograft Project that involves stem cells and biotechnology.

As the Frankenstein family disembarked the train at the station, they were met by the town Burgomaster and the reigning council members who pointedly told them, "We are here to meet you, not to greet you".

Some time later, Henry's fiancée, Elizabeth, and best friend, Victor Moritz, came to the college to confide in Waldman their fears for Henry's health. The first of numerous sequels to the 1931 Frankenstein were Universal's The Bride of Frankenstein (see above), again directed by James Whale and starring Clive and Karloff; and Son of Frankenstein (see below), directed by Rowland V.He might have spoken, but I did not hear; one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped and rushed downstairs. When Frankenstein was re-issued thirteen years after its initial success, Shelley, by then beaten down by the tragedy of her life and attempting a shaky rapprochement with her still-hostile family, undertook a conciliatory re-editing her work, putting far more emphasis upon the religious implications of Frankenstein’s transgressions. That we continue to react so strongly to the centrepiece of a film over seventy years old is proof positive that cinematic miracles do sometimes happen. Frankenstein is obsessed, nearly to the point of insanity, with creating a living, breathing human being in his own image. Looking for a quick way to capitalise upon the huge and unexpected success of Dracula, Universal Studios made the obvious move and put into production an adaptation of Frankenstein.
