About this deal

Finally, you’ll need to cure the screed. A great way to do this is with sealed polyethylene sheets laid over your floor that’s left for a week to cure. Again as with curing the same goes! To ensure the screed retains its strength and flexibility it must be allowed to dry naturally with no interference so don’t use any artificial drying and keep windows and doors closed. With the EP 90/230 the screeding material can be carried and filled exactly into the gaps left by the screeding rails, for example water-pipes.

we will work with a 50mm covering and to lay our screeds we will use some 75 x 50mm timbers (3 inch x 2 inch). This is a standard size timber. For most room sizes a timber of a standard 4.8m long is plenty and this can be cut down as required. Prepare the Floor to be Screeded

Conclusion

Short screeder boards can usually be managed by a single operative, but larger boards are best used by two operatives, one at each end (durrr!). Often, a gentle transverse (side-to-side) sawing motion of the screeder board will help its accurate passage through the bedding layer material, scraping off the excess sand as it moves along. Once you complete screeding your sand, remove the screed guides and use a trowel to fill in the spot where your screed guides were resting. There are two main methodologies followed: working up to the rail; and stripping rails prior to laying. With the screeds cured and dried the next task is to fill in all the gaps. Mix up some more screed mix in the cement mixer and once done start shoveling it into the first gap between screed lines, piling it slightly higher than the levels of screed. Unbonded Screed: As the name suggests, unbonded screed is not joined to the existing floor or surface and is normally laid on top of a membrane to help prevent damp and moisture penetration

Mixing screed properly is essential to ensure your floors are durable and stable. Certain methods of mixing can cause uneven distribution of materials, leading to weaknesses in the screed itself. We wouldn’t recommend mixing by hand unless you’re working on a very small surface area. Laying a level floor screed over a large area is difficult and to do so “By eye” requires years of practice and experience.Getting the mix ratio right is so important for a number of reasons. Firstly, it ensures the durability and strength of the screed, providing a solid and sturdy foundation for the chosen flooring solution. Secondly, the right mix determines the workability of the screed and how easy it is to spread and level. In addition to this, the mix ratio affects adhesion and bonding properties, ensuring that the screed connects well with the underlying concrete floor. Begin by completely stripping away the current flooring until you reach the concrete sub-base. Then thoroughly clean the concrete by sweeping up any dust or debris and scrubbing with sugar soap. Note: If the quality of the substrate is very weak/poor, it is advisable to get ‘down’ to as solid a surface as possible. (It might be that the more you brush, the more substrate you remove! If this is the case, please read our article Priming & Strengthening of a Weak / Porous Substrate)

In this DIY guide you will learn how to screed a floor using level timbers as guides and get a great flat and level finish. What is Floor Screed? If you’d prefer to hire a qualified tradesperson to screed your floor, please use our search feature. How long does floor screed take to dry? Bedding Mortars We supply a range of fast set, cement & resin based bedding mortars which are ideal for installing manhole covers, utility access covers, frames, highways ironwork and the bonding of granite, sandstone & porphyry setts, paving slabs, flags and bedding kerbs. Our range of high strength, bedding mortars mean roads, footpaths & highways can be reopened to traffic in as little as 40 minutes, meaning less disruption for the general public. As we are mixing up a 4:1 mix, 4 sharp sand to one cement, using your measuring apparatus, starting with the sharp sand fill it and level it off and tip it into the mixer, repeat this for 4 loads.

Depending on which model you choose, each EP-Uni set includes one aluminium-profile screeding pole (1,600mm or 2,300mm), one handle for stand-up screeding, and an adjustable telescopic unit that can be used on varying profiles. The sheet will need to stay in place for 5-7 days to allow the floor to fully cure. There is no speedy way around this or short cut, it will take as long as it takes! Quite often in the building trade, the terms drying and curing are interchanged and are used to mean the same thing. When it comes to floor screed there is a distinct difference between the two. After screeding the two sections in our example, we’re ready for the last step, filling the voids created from our screed rails. When you do this, you first need to pull your screed rails away, then toss in some loose aggregate or sand, whichever one you used as your bedding material for the project. Then top it off with a trowel or something like a flat broom that can reach farther away.
