About this deal

The book is done in short stories. Which at times annoyed me, I wasn't expected a short story book, I was expected a long running story. Ramona is four to Beezus’ nine in this book, and she IS pretty awful: ruining two of Beezus’ birthday cakes in one day, inviting her friends over for a party without telling anyone, and, worst of all, defacing a library book so she can keep it. In “Beezus and Ramona,” you’ll discover a charming story of sisterhood and family dynamics in a fictional setting. The book follows the everyday life of nine-year-old Beezus and her four-year-old sister, Ramona. You’ll relate to the love and connection between these two sisters despite their differences.

Beverly Cleary does have remarkable insight into the minds of children. Ramona as a character feels like a vivid recollection of the hundred miniature crises that successively fill life's horizon when one is very young. I appreciate how how Cleary writes in a matter-of-fact way that produces gentle humor and maturation rather than heedless sermonizing. I enjoyed my hours spent with Ramona. Henry Huggins: Beezus' red-headed friend. The Ramona series of books are a spin-off of the Henry Huggins series. And I was overjoyed, because I knew in that moment that my 4 year old got it...that empathy...that connection to characters that made me fall in love with reading.

Ramona the Brave: Ramona faces fears big and small and proves that she is indeed brave. Journey along with her as she navigates a new school and discovers her inner strength. The Lexile score for “Beezus and Ramona” is 780L, which corresponds to an approximate reading level of 3rd-5th grade. Reading the series all at once also makes her process of growing up more clear; learning how to get along with her sister, her parents, figuring out her teachers and struggling with classroom behavior -- it really is a joy to watch her grow from a pesky toddler scribbling in library books to a 'zero-teen' year old being trusted to watch her baby sister on her own. It’s important to note that DRA levels can vary slightly depending on the specific edition or publisher of the book. Language and Vocabulary This was my 4 years first regular chapter book. We started out reading it, and then switched to listening to an audiobook during the commute to school. Howie Kemp: Ramona's friend who loves building things. He becomes Ramona's cousin in Ramona Forever when his Uncle Hobart marries her Aunt Beatrice. He never gets excited about anything, which really makes Ramona disappointed. Well, they're good. *Of course* they're good. People have been loving and praising Ramona for decades. But they weren't quite what I expected. From reading my friends' enthusiasm about Ramona, I expected her to be a kind of wild and crazy kid, a child Lucy Ricardo. (For those too young to remember, Lucy Ricardo was the central character of the TV show I Love Lucy, played by Lucille Ball. I'm guess even the young folks will have heard of I Love Lucy -- if not, google it.) Librarian Kathleen Odean appreciates Ramona's fearless attitude, calling her "irrepressible" and saying "She represents the kind of girl who has not been subdued by adults or the world in general." [7] Twentieth-Century Children's Writers cites Ramona's "spunk, her impermeable but often ambivalent bond to Beezus, and her unsurpassed creativity... (Cleary) never sacrifices Ramona's integrity or intelligence".

Ramona the Pest: Ramona’s curiosity and energy make her a handful as she enters kindergarten, and you’ll find yourself cheering on her amusing escapades.I really love this series! I have as much fun reading these books to Isabelle as Isabelle does listening to me read them. The book follows the story of nine-year-old Beezus Quimby and her lively four-year-old sister Ramona. As you read, you’ll find that the reading level is appropriate for children aged 7 and up, with a GRL (Guided Reading Level) of O, a DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) level of 34, and a Lexile measure of 780 L. The language used in the story is accessible for young readers, with only mild sass, such as the use of the word “dumb.” Ramona and Her Father: When Mr. Quimby loses his job, the entire family faces challenges, including Ramona. This story grapples with serious themes while maintaining its lovable charm. In other words, it was normal school life and normal family life for the Quimby family living in Portland, Oregon. Portland is also where Beverly Cleary grew up. She wrote plenty about that in her first memoir, A Girl From Yamhill. The Portland elementary school she attended is now named after her. Part of the appeal of the series is watching Ramona grow up. Cleary's writing has been praised for its ability to show her main character maturing: "Throughout the series, Cleary depicts Ramona's emotional development as well as her adventures and misadventures." [1] Anita Silvey calls Ramona "Cleary's most developed characterization, a child at once ordinary and extraordinary." [2] Critical reception [ edit ]
