About this deal

A beautiful collaboration between Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch and illustrator Pamela Tait: a unique visual reinterpretation of Murdoch's favourite Belle and Sebastian songs. Apart from his ventures as a lyricist, Murdoch also published the diaristic memoir The Celestial Café in 2010, wrote and directed the 2014 film God Help the Girl, and collaborated with illustrator Pamela Tait on last year’s Belle and Sebastian: Illustrated Lyrics. He’s also about two-thirds of the way through writing a new nonfiction manuscript, and tells me he enjoys the freedom in trying out new literary genres: “You can feel your way, and it’s actually more fun to be making it up as you go along,” he admits. In celebration of A Bit of Previous, Murdoch outlines the books that changed him, the books he keeps returning to, and the books that Belle & Sebastian obsess over together. Stuart’s story was about an older boy teaching a younger girl who was still at school how to play guitar, and it reminded me of Momus' song ‘ The Guitar Lesson’. The story mainly involved the boy going to the girl’s house when she finished school, and then talking to her about other things while he was supposed to be teaching her guitar. David compares the landscape of this short story to other songs Murdoch was writing at the time, and says that the short story of Belle and Sebastian helped to give form to the universe Murdoch’s songs.

Glasgow has a notable literary scene, between Good Press, the Zine Library, and the Poetry Club… what’s local that you love? I've been to some new venues lately, like the YouTube theater, where the sound design was a complete disaster. I was pleasantly surprised that an outdoor venue like the Greek had great sound, not only for the headliner, but also for the opening acts. Had an amazing time, both Tennis and Bell & Sebastian sounded fantastic. The Greek theatre was a perfect size venue for both those bands. I would go see both play again anywhere. A beautiful collaboration between Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch and illustrator Pamela Tait, a unique visual reinterpretation of Murdoch’s favourite songs.

Although the name “Belle and Sebastian” is originally taken from the French TV show Belle et Sébastien about a boy and his dog, this song relates the story of a boy and girl. Our first concert since the pandemic began and it couldn't have been a better experience. The band were in great form, the sound was fantastic, and the song selection balanced the old and new perfectly. The band gifted the audience with love and joy. Don't miss this tour.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Great musicians but terrible sound system at the Fox made by Aania on 6/6/22 Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland Would you lose interest in me if I said the Bible? Of course it’s a controversial book. It covers the Old Testament, it covers Judaism, Christianity goes on with the New Testament, there’s lots of crossover with Islam as well. I understand very much that the Bible is a human interpretation of God’s words, so I’m quite relaxed when I read it. I filter through the stuff I don’t like and cling onto the stuff that I like. I love the stories in John, like the wedding in Cana, or the woman at the well, or when Mary Magdalene washes Jesus’ feet with perfume. There’s amazing personal, radical stories. I’m invested in that. As we were going through the entrance, I was told I can't enter the premises with my Fuji x100v camera. I asked what difference they see between that and my iPhone camera that was right next to my Fuji in the tray. They said that the problem is that the Fuji is an interchangeable lens camera. I told them no, it isn't, it's a fixed lens camera; the iPhone on the other hand has three lenses in it. They said that may be the case but the Fuji is still a zoom camera. I said, no it's actually a fixed focal lens camera so it cannot zoom. The iPhone however can. At this point the person told me flat out: "sir, your equipment is not welcome at this event". This negative experience put an unnecessary damper on an otherwise great night.

Also, I really enjoyed the civilized nature of the Greek. Parking was easy and awesome, and the food was good. There were pleasant tables to eat at prior to the show and the lines were short.

Originally signed to Jeepster Records, the band released a number of albums before signing with Rough Trade Records in the UK and Matador Records in the US. Their discography includes the studio albums Tigermilk, famous for being recorded in only three days, and If You're Feeling Sinister. They were both released in 1996, with the well known Boy with the Arab Strap released in 1998, Storytelling in 2002, The Life Pursuit in 2006, and Belle and Sebastian Write About Love in 2010. The band have also appeared on various compilation albums and live albums. I did science at University in the mid-’80s. I loved the idea of science and I think I was maybe slightly misguided. I started to lose interest in all the actual work and I would be reading literature rather than doing my physics work. But when a book came along—something like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance or The Tao of Physics—that did it for me. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, that’s a touchstone volume, a famous book. Some of the younger [readers] may not have heard about it, but I would recommend that one to them. Great show started right on time. Some of Stuart's jokes were recycled from previous shows, but i do the same thing.

A beautiful collaboration between Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch and illustrator Pamela Tait: a unique visual reinterpretation of Murdoch’s favourite Belle and Sebastian songs. Rating: 4 out of 5 B&S hot in Oakland but not the Greek by G Man on 6/6/22 Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland Seeing Belle and Sebastian at the Greek was delightful! I went with a close friend and we had a blast. The price of the food was a little high, but it tasted way better than other venues (Sofi Stadium). We had great seats, the show felt so intimate! Will happily see any band at Greek - perfect venue!

Your faith and practice in both Christianity and Buddhism are central to your life. What other books are significant to you? I really wish the Hollywood Bowl experience could be more like the Greek. I know it's a size thing, but I completely dread going to the Bowl now, while I was super happy with my experience at Belle & Sebastian. Stuart Murdoch had been using the name Belle and Sebastian since writing a short story of the same name in the summer of 1995. B&S founding member Stuart David talks about the story in his memoir In The All-Night Cafe: A beautiful collaboration between Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch and illustrator Pamela Tait, resulting in visual reinterpretations of the band's most-loved songs.

So good to see Belle and Sébastien live. Very enjoyable show. Felt like it was over too soon. Good times! Rating: 4 out of 5 Great night but bad experience at the entrance by Ambrus on 6/7/22 Greek Theatre - Los Angeles
