The new version of XO is a blend of copper pot and column still rums that are aged between 5 and 17 years in ex-bourbon, American whiskey, and cognac casks. That means the island has lots of underground water, a key element in what makes Mount Gay unique and why the British decided to focus sugarcane and rum production here in the 17th century. Finally, there’s the 1703, a blend that varies from year to year and might include 30-year-old rums. Following a five-year apprenticeship under Mount Gay’s previous master distiller, she took on her current role.

Clean and clear Mount Gay Silver is the brand’s entry-level rum, but grab it while you can, because it’s being removed from the American market. The master blender at Mount Gay is in the shape of Allen Smith who has been with the distillery over 20 years.Smith retired, and Trudiann Branker took over as the company’s master blender, becoming the first woman to hold the title in the island’s history of rum production. Under the new French ownership, Mount Gay enjoyed a wide distribution network and, consequently, became rapidly popular. An exciting addition to the Mount Gay collection, and the first in what will become an annual series from the Barbados distillery.

That name came from Sober’s friend, Sir John Gay Alleyne, who would eventually manage the rum business. Unfortunately Mount Gay has fallen to the massive, multi-billion dollar subsidies given to Diageo, Fortune and Bacardi and the company has been sold in pieces.Mount Gay has been closely linked to the world of sailing for decades, as symbolized by its red (often worn-out pink) logo-bearing hat. Mount Gay have recently re-branded their bottles and introduced a few new lines in the shape of Black Barrel and a few limited edition cask finish editions have also appeared. One of the first rums I was aware she had changed was Mount Gay XO, and I was curious to see how well it held up to the original blend that was such an essential part of my rum foundation.
