About this deal

This is a loaded question with people falling rather staunchly on one side or the other. Let’s look at the different sides. Reasons Against Cleaning Your Barrel Regularly If you’ve read my article about dieseling you’ll know you shouldn’t do it intentionally, but that many springers will still diesel. Particularly if you were over-zealous in your oiling. This heavy dieseling will result in burned up oil being tossed down the barrel. Over time a problem will develop.

Imagine you’ve been sitting in the woods patiently for hours and your time is now. You have a squirrel in your sits. Calmly you pull the trigger, and you miss. At a range, you almost never miss normally! A: The kind of cleaning kit you’ll need for your air rifle will depend on the calibre of your airgun. Most air rifles are .177 or .22 calibre, so you’ll need a kit that includes a bore brush for those sizes, as well as suitable oil and cleaning pellets. You may also want to get a pull-through cleaner, which can be helpful in getting all the dirt and grime out of your barrel. Q: How do I clean my air rifle barrel? Some people say cleaning pellets can cause damage. I haven’t seen any evidence supporting that claim, but there is plenty of evidence pointing to their effectiveness. Look up your particular airgun before using cleaning pellets though. It’s possible there are problems with some models I’m not aware of. While airgun barrels do get dirty, they don’t need as much cleaning as a real firearm. The main issue that you find with airgun barrels is that they amass a build up of oil or deposits of metal from firing pellets. Generally, when cleaning the internal barrel, two rules apply – We’re nearing the end of the list of cleaning tips, and this is one for immediately after you’ve finished your task. Some people become alarmed after they have finished cleaning their air rifle barrel when they notice they have reduced accuracy. If this happens to you, did you damage the barrel? The easiest way to insert a pull-through is directly into the barrel – this BSA Ultra XL makes the job easy Have you tried pulling a cloth through your barrel with a muzzle brake or suppressor on it? It’s not easy. Sometimes you can’t take them off though. That’s where a basic straw comes in. Insert it into the brake or suppressor and you’ve created a sleeve for your cloth to pull through. DO NOT try to shoot out an obstruction in your barrel. Seriously, just don’t. It sounds silly to state, but people will try, and I don’t want you to be one of those people. It will cause lasting problems and is dangerous. Instead get out your trusty cleaning rod and push the obstruction out. As always push breech to bore.

A: How often you should clean your air rifle will depend on how often you use it. If you never use it, you won’t have any real need to clean it (provided that it’s stored correctly). A well-made air rifle won’t need to be cleaned each time it’s used, and if anything, cleaning too often can actually risk damaging the barrel. All of that is to say that you only need to clean your air rifle if you notice a decline in accuracy, or if you want to experiment with a new kind of pellet. Even then, many people recommend never cleaning an air rifle at all. Q: What kind of cleaning kit do I need for my air rifle? Possibly the best argument for cleaning your barrel regularly is to apply oil appropriately. This kind of cleaning will ensure you have the most protection applied to your gun at any given time. Reasons to Clean Your Barrel Periodically It is completely unnecessary. Airguns don’t leave the same residue that firearms do inside their barrels. On top of that when a pellet is fired it ends up clearing other debris most of the time. Some people even say Olympians often don’t clean their barrels. I haven’t spoken to one so I don’t know for sure. Reasons For Cleaning Your Barrels RegularlyIt’s easy to think about cleaning your air rifle during the times you are using it, but if you are going to be putting it away for awhile a little extra oil is great for protection. A LITTLE! The point is just to add an extra coat of protection.

I don’t know what gun you are using. I can’t know the specifics of every airgun. What I am recommending here are general tips. If your owner’s manual says something specific or different the owner’s manual wins. It was created by the manufacturer and they have a vested interest in your gun lasting. They want you to tell your friends how durable your air rifle is. Problems Specific to CO2 and PCP Barrels We’ve paid all this attention to the inside of our barrel, what now? It’s funny how enthusiastic shooters can be for caring for their guns, but how often people will forget to properly oil the outside of the barrel. It doesn’t take much but you should apply some oil/rust preventative to the outside of your air rifle every now and then. Pay particular attention prior to storage. Springers With Heavy Dieseling Will Need More Cleaning Often people forget about the crown of their airgun too. Make sure not to damage it. There are test results that say it’s not as serious an issue as some people will tell you, but when it is a problem it’s an expensive one to fix. Use a Brass, Bronze or Nylon BrushThere are reasons for this but just think of it this way. The pellet travels down the barrel in a particular direction, and so should your cleaning supplies. It’s better for the barrel and avoids damage. No Solvent Required It’s best to carry out the barrel-cleaning process in a clean area. Some of the products being used can irritate skin and eyes, and we are also dealing with the removal of lead, a poisonous metal. Latex gloves will offer the best protection, although I just prefer to wash my hands thoroughly once I’ve finished. I also recommend you clean your barrel when you first receive it, before putting it into storage, and when taking it out. I’ll discuss each of those in a little more detail later in the article. Airgun Barrels Aren’t Hard One of the biggest draws of a lot of Airguns is the bespoke woodwork that distinguishes them from other products. Airguns make use of a variety of different woods, including beech and hardwood, and although these are varnished at the manufacturing stage, over time the wood can show the effects of general wear and tear. The good news is this is easily treatable. These items normally require Identification (Passport) or a Firearms / Shotgun Certificate before they are handed over. Shotguns, Rifles, Airguns and Moderators are usually good examples. When purchasing a 'collection only' item you are in effect paying a deposit for your goods. In all instances you can choose to collect your item from one of our stores (Exeter, Dorset or Newport) or from a 3rd party gun dealer. The latter may be at an additional cost to yourself.

Also, when taking your air rifle out of storage a cleaning is a good idea. This makes sure there is nothing in the barrel that could cause you issues later. Use Only Airgun Oils PCP and CO2 air rifles are particularly prone to rust. CO2 is the biggest culprit. This is due to moisture caused by the compressed bursts of air or CO2 and the temperature differences that occur. It’s not necessarily a major issue, but you’ll find these two airgun types susceptible. A warranty is provided by each manufacturer to ensure that your product is free of defect in both materials and workmanship. A: The best way to clean your air rifle pellets is with warm, soapy water. This will get rid of any dust and debris. When dried, they should be lubricated with oil to prevent oxidation. Cleaning air rifle pellets may improve accuracy and prevent fouling. Q: Can I use WD-40 to clean my air rifle? If for some reason parcels are required to be redirected then an additional charge might be levied (where applicable). Also if goods are refused or not called for a charge might also be incurred. This list is not a full and exhaustive list and other reasons may apply. INSTEAD, USE CLEANING PELLETS – Cleaning pellets are a very efficient way to ensure your barrel stays clean. The general rule of thumb is to use one cleaning pellet after every tin of pellets you put through it. If you want to go the extra step, you can also make use of a cleaning rod as well. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE NOT CONFIDENT – We will reiterate though, if this is not something you are comfortable with doing, DO NOT attempt it. The last thing you want to do is destroy the mechanism in the process!
