Before mixing a large quantity, test-mix a drop of your paint with a drop of the soap to be used. Once in a great while I've found soaps that congeal the paint into lumpy globs. Not completely sure why, though I suspect it may be some of the "super-anti-bacterial" additives they're adding to many detergents these days. Washes are an indispensable tool for most painters. While some people claim that washes are a “beginner’s crutch”, in my opinion, washes can often accomplish shading with as good as, or even better results (in some cases), than tediously painting many layers. I was eager to get started so I unscrewed the top and then remembered to take a before pic with my phone. Not the best pic but you get the idea. The colors underneath the dried wash gain a predictable “warm” and darker tone. Merely add your preferred layers and highlights onto your model. Mix these colors in a glazed ceramic palette.
