The Alzheimer’s storyline felt especially pointless - the wife wants to talk to her husband about the letter he wrote, that was handed to her in the present, that she refused to read, but she wants him to tell her about it in the past? it’s rare that a book less than 200 pages can make me feel this way, make me feel so whole and complete and yet this silly little book has managed to do exactly that.Although the foundation of the book is based on a script written by Kawaguchi, it doesn’t detract from the gentle and reflective story-telling of the book — asking the reader to consider the fundamental question: what would you change if you could go back in time? Another area which seems like a missed opportunity is the handling of perhaps the most interesting character, Kazu. A short book which seemed too long amd repetitive for me (like how it happened with Autumn by Ali Smith).
Maybe it's not great, maybe it's more sentimental than a Spielberg movie aiming for an Oscar, but overall, I personally found a lot to like. There’s no denying this book is beautiful, from Kawaguchi’s writing to the morals and lessons our 4 protagonists learn along the way, this book weaves a transcendent hope throughout its pages and is one in which you would be able to take away something different every time you read it. don't mind me, just adding more and more books to my currently reading because all of my library loans are coming in at once and making me into a juggler except with books. Perhaps if the stories had varied a little more, or the rules weren’t quite as stringent allowing for more trepidation in the experiences, I would have felt more satisfied.
It’s a waste of a great character (the film, predictably, has decided that the best way to expand her role is to introduce a love interest absent from the book…), and while we don’t need to know all of her, and the café’s, secrets, a little would have gone a long way. This book only took 2 days for me to finish but it has left a lasting impression and left me asking myself the same questions as many of you will: if you could go back in time for a short conversation with a loved one, would you? This is by no means a great novel, but I found the time travel rules fairly amusing (and frustrating, but it kind of delighted me in that regard as well).
