About this deal

Each poem describes a different kind of relationship, indicating the knots people will tie themselves into through preconception or misunderstanding. Each reader, after their initial dizzying resistance is overcome, will probably untie them differently. This particular book is unique in that it is such an accessible book of poems, yet it reveals many of the ways Laing believed ordinary people tie themselves in knots. And by failing and failing, again and again, to undo the Knots mean folks keep tying up again - and getting up again from the dust of our defeated rebooting each time, knowing there IS a way through it all - we WILL succeed.

The large knot of which this a part climaxes in a series of varia tions on the theme of differentiation between the self and the world, “me” and “not me,” the “mine” “not mine. If these thoughts were spoken out loud, those voicing them would be accused by the majority of overanalysing the situation. But I had had an ‘intuition of Being’, a vision of a Clear Space where ALL the Knots would be loosened. If you can read this book and understand it through to the end, you will be able to understand anything, most of all yourself.

A presentation copy, inscribed by the author 'To my good friend Batts Xmas 1970 (Its great to be copied)' in black ink to the front free endpaper. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver, front cover lettered in blind, pink endpapers, dust jacket. But in “Knots,” Laing has abandoned his ordinarily graceful prose for highly condensed poems, the knots of the title. But it's also got the ability to make you deeply reflect on the nature of human interaction - between you and your parents, your lover, yourself. Knots is a logical breakdown of every argument possible, based on how one's identity is affected by others.

Like Freud 40 years ago, Laing is read as psychi atric theoretician, political philos opher and personal guru. After having been through some 'knots' in relationships myself, it now seems a bit like John Cleese's Families and how to survive them. For the last 12 years, in eight books and numerous articles, Laing has, to the dismay of much of ortho dox psychiatry, pushed his own subjectivity to its limits.
