About this deal

In this book, Magan forces us to experience the grief of our loss of this knowledge while he attempts to pave the way back to connecting with our heritage. By infusing his work with his own personal experience of the places he has visited and explored, he proves just how simple it can be to reconnect with these moments of lost knowledge, leaving us a guide map to the landmarks in Ireland that still hold the gravitas and energy to reconnect us to the past. It is with this ‘life-sustaining wisdom’ he hopes to rejuvenate the present with tales of the past and to illustrate just how much we have changed and similarly, just how much we have remained the very same. It often presumes a level of existing expertise by the reader, but even Irish readers may not remember what exactly the Táin Bó Cuailgne is. He uncovers the ancient myths that have shaped Ireland's national identity and are embedded in the strata of land that have endured through millennia – from ice ages through to famines and floods.

While the shaky memoir is, at times, distracting and disorganized, it can be overwhelmed with luxuriant descriptions of the land that both native Irish and international audiences will be intrigued by. He says his childhood, some of which he spent in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, allowed him to meet with those who lived on the islands and witness their connection not only with the land but with the mythic elements of our culture. Here is a quick description and cover image of book Listen to the Land Speak: A Journey into the Wisdom of What Lies Beneath Us written by Manchan Magan which was published in October 6th 2022. I also want to give credit to how Christianity was tackled in the book, in a way I have never encountered before even in an increasingly secular society which is to show how paganism was mutated or “borrowed” by Christianity. For one thing it is described as a follow-up to '32 Words for Field' but it is less grounded than the earlier book which I really liked.

A story told as if in conversation, that left me with the knowledge that I have an authority, sovereignty and power derived from the land and my ancestors that only needs to be re-acknowledged to be accessed. A very beautiful book telling stories of the history of Ireland’s mythology and pre-Christian religious/spiritual tradition. The conflict between the traditions of the Irish people and the oppressive cultures of Britain and the Vikings play out on the page as the landmarks and centers of the Irish religion are forever changed by colonization. For example, he establishes that the archaeological evidence pointing to the date of Lough Neagh's flooding closely matches the date given in the lake's mythological origin story down through the oral tradition. His decades of travel to every corner of the world often serve to further illustrate a point and demonstrate the many similarities between myths from different continents. The chapters go into detail without being long winded and paint such vivid pictures of the old stories but include a modern twist. They reckon that Ireland and the uk were connected about 8,000 years ago, so oral storytelling and traditions were already established so there are similarities and connections there and I’m really fascinated to explore.
