About this deal

I think this issue needs to be addressed a little more; the fact that it isn't kind of smacks of privilege. This beautiful novel-in-verse covers a wide range of important topics and societal issues, such as bullying, mental illness and OCD, as well as the immigrant experience. Frances is a humble misfit who doesn’t fully understand her role in school, the world, or even her family.

An incredibly valuable and inclusive resource for young LGBT+ people… A much needed reminder that nobody needs to go through the queer experience alone.Does not end on a firmly "happy" ending, but demonstrates how people struggling with things may slowly reach out for help or might take more than a conveniently encompassed school year to resolve what they are going through - and some things might be a lifelong journey. Second, though the notes for adults at the end pay lip service to the fact that being gay is illegal and/or downright dangerous in some parts of the world, that isn't even addressed in the story. Open a dialogue with the children in your life about the importance of love and acceptance with this Silver Moonbeam Award Winner. Their children, on the other hand, bitterly rail against their parents' irresponsibility and their relaxed, laissez-faire attitude.

The first is a "Note to Kids" page, written with information about the rainbow symbol's history; having pride; advice about talking to friends and/or trusted adults, if help is needed; affirming messages about love and families; and so much more. I read this book as a digital book from Hoopla and enjoyed the magnifying feature that allowed you to zoom in on different parts of the text or illustrations. You could create a simple photo book for your little ones, with photos of the family, pets and home, with words to help them on their reading journey.

I loved the tone and writing, as well as Frances' relationship with her sister and her friendship with Annie. This story follows a boy wearing a rainbow heart shirt, as he shares with his friend about being teased and bullied. A child can wear a rainbow t-shirt and stand up for their gay family and friends in much of the Western world without needing to fear for their safety. If you’re in the mood for something more romantic, check out our poetic personalised book Ten Reasons I Love You.It might also be a good choice for a child who has witnessed this type of bullying, or even a child who has bullied others in this way. This thoughtful and heartfelt gift is filled with pages of heartfelt reasons why you love and appreciate the special person in your life. The illustrations are odd -- why is one child wearing winter clothing in the scene where they are flying kites?
