After a hugely successful and house-packed show in London and Leeds, this highly popular Bengali opera (Jatra pala/ ancient rural theatre of Bengal) of visceral folk music and dazzling dance in a stunning theatrical setting is touring to Brighton now in partnership with Diversity Lewes, an East Sussex based BAME let community organisation.Narrated in English, the story unfolds a powerful allegory of modern capitalism through live folk music, dazzling dance and a unique way of story-telling. Based on a feudal society of ancient Bengal, the story involves a snake charmer and his daughter, a prince, and a poisonous snake – will love prevail over class conflict?This form of musical theatre evolved in the ancient Bengal, and plays an important part in rituals, music, folk life and heritage in Bengali culture.This theatre experience will take audiences to the boorish yard under a Banyan tree in the rural village of Bengal, where these special story-based musicals are traditionally performed.Produced by RadhaRaman Society, this musical is scripted, adapted and directed by Ahmed Kaysher and Vidushi Chandra Chakraborty, it features a critically acclaimed dancer and actor Sonia Sultana as the daughter of snake charmer, folk dancer Sohel Ahmed as the prince, Kazi Nazrul Islam as the king, award-winning singer Jessy Barua as the female singer, Amalendu Podder on the music arrangement, Piyas Barua on Tabla and Amar Baidya on supporting role and many others on different characters.'A truly formidable live musical theatre evolved from ancient Bengal with soulful folk music and spectacular dance.
