Laphroaig is a Scotch Whisky distillery on the western Scottish island of Islay and one of the best-known of all the single malts. Starting from 2021, thanks to the synergy with Tree-Nation, Bottle of Italy has contributed to the planting of over 6,000 trees. I have drunk more Laphroaig 10 over the past forty years than all the other whiskies added together. What sets Laphroaig Distillery apart and makes it truly unique is its unparalleled dedication to peat. I've only been through about 4 dozen single malts over 20 years but this is my favourite overall (so far).

One of whom was Ian Hunter, who laid down the process for Laphroaig 10 more than 75 years ago: and these methods are still followed today. Laphroaig 10 Year Old was first released in 2004 and has since become a popular expression of the Laphroaig whisky brand. It also has a distilling process which has been developed and refined over the course of 200 years by a succession of passionate master distillers.The distillery's location on the Isle of Islay, known for its abundant peat bogs, allows Laphroaig to create whiskies with a character that is deeply rooted in the island's terroir. The use of heavily peated malt, along with traditional floor malting techniques, infuses the spirit with the unmistakable aroma of smoldering peat fires. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smoldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak.

Being a coastal distillery, there is plenty of saltiness in the dram too, it really helps to enhance the peaty flavours, and balance the sweetness, making for a really pleasant and balanced dram. Laphroaig whiskies are known for their bold and intense flavors, characterized by the pungent aroma of peat smoke, medicinal notes, and a hint of maritime saltiness. The original Laphroaig, distilled the same way today as when Ian Hunter invented it over 75 years ago. Following this, the grain is dried over the same smouldering embers before being laid out on our malt floor, overlooking the sea.Laphroaig's commitment to direct-fired stills adds to the intensity of the peat influence, resulting in whiskies that carry a powerful and evocative smokiness. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it appears beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love. The palate shows peat smoke from the first sip plus an undercurrent of honey, finishing with black pepper heat. A dram with depth and extraordinary texture, Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength Batch 10 Bottled 2018 is exceptional.
