Standard or full-size machines are the most versatile machine size as they work for a range of sewing applications. Whether you are having trouble threading your machine, can’t work out how to change the stitch settings or just want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your sewing machine it is always best to have a copy of the manual on hand. About This Item 14 Stitch metal chassis sewing machine Drop in bobbin LED bulb 4 step button hole 3 year manufacturer warranty Product description The LS14S is a traditional metal chassis sewing machine with 14 stitches and including a 4 step button hole. Note that the adjustable stitch width control on this model appears to be fairly limited, and may not affect all of the inbuilt stitches. It comes with 14 stitch options and a lock stitch facility, ensuring all stitches and patterns are securely locked off at the end of the sewing sequence. You’ll need to experiment with the tension for thin jersey, silk, and chiffon, but you can create (mostly) smooth and flat seams. It can quilt straight lines OK, but the machine does wander slightly to the left/right, so it’s hard to sew perfectly straight.

The Brother LS14 has basic features such as a Free Arm with Removable Cover, Standard Foot Pedal, and an Inbuilt light for safe and easy sewing. It doesn’t matter how much you change the speed during a line of stitching, the stitches are consistent.I couldn’t sew perfectly straight with the standard foot, so many of my blind hem stitches didn’t catch the hem!

It has the most important stitches: straight, zig zag, blind hem, rectangle buttonhole, and a few extras. It pulls the fabric into a tunnel with the standard tension of 4, so more experimenting is needed with that. If automated controls are important to you then you might like to consider a machine classed as Competent, Advanced or Professional.I do think a complete beginner would struggle the first time, but with the manual and a few practice attempts, I think you’ll be fine. For example, this model does not have automated controls for the needle stop position, automated back tacks or automated thread trimming.

There is a helpful diagram for how to insert the bobbin on the needle plate, as well as clear measurement markings. The top of the machine also has clear illustrations showing how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin. My old machine had a horizontal 'leg' at the back which supported the sewing table better when using the free arm mode. In comparison to some higher-end machines the options are limited but really these 14 options are all that you need – the only missing stitches would be edge finishing stitches (which you can use zig zag stitch for), eyelets (not really an essential!

You can control the speed using the presser foot though, you’ll just need to practice on some scrap fabric to get a feel of how much pressure you need to apply for your desired speed. Adjustable upper thread tension gives you complete control over the tension of the upper thread and this tension can be manually adjusted to balance the tension of your stitches.
