Don't ask me, I already know.” So sang Martin Fry, the embittered romeo of ABC, in 1982. We hear you, Martin! And purely as a one-off, because this February's Spellbound falls so close to St. Valentine's Day, on SATURDAY 15th FEBRUARY, we're throwing a Valentine's Party with a twist. Don't worry, we haven't gone all soft and soppy on you, and this isn't a dating or couples event or anything cheesy like that. THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG is the name we're giving to our Alternative Valentine's Party, and we'll be exclusively playing songs with 'love', 'heart', 'romance', 'kiss' etc in the title or prominently featured in the lyrics. And, this being an Alternative 80s club, you can imagine that the idea of love in those songs is often a little, shall we say... tainted. You're probably already making a playlist in your head right now. They are absolute bangers, are they not?You can buy advance tickets for £6 here: www.komedia.co.uk/brighton/club/spellbound or call the Box Office on 01273 647100 (And please RSVP to the Facebook event...) THE FACTSVenue: Komedia Studio Bar, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN (see http://www.komedia.co.uk/brighton for detailed travel info) Opening hours: 9:00pm-3:00amAdmission: £6Advance tickets: www.komedia.co.uk/brighton/club/spellbound 01273 647100When: (usually) on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUTSpellbound, which happens on (usually) the third Saturday of every month, is the 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights. Other 80s nights might give you the kitsch and the cheese, but we play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our core timespan is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as our Doomsday, but we do spin the odd track from outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of grown-ups who remember it all from first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it 'as new'. And look out for the Eighties visuals to help with the Time Travel...You want genres? Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth Pop and Ska…You want names? Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Clash, The Cramps, The Human League, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Talking Heads, Joy Division, The Specials, Public Image Ltd, Adam & The Ants, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The B-52's, Gary Numan, Psychedelic Furs, The Cult, Dead Kennedys, Killing Joke, The Jam, The Damned, Japan, New Model Army, Dead Or Alive, Fields Of The Nephilim, Teardrop Explodes, Violent Femmes, The Fall, The Birthday Party, Devo, Associates, Fuzzbox, Simple Minds, The Beat, Spear Of Destiny, Pixies, Alien Sex Fiend and loads more...ARRIVE EARLY! We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, ARRIVE EARLY!CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK! Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £3.50, exclusively for Spellbound!THE UNDERPANTS SONG! If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of something strong! YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.FUTURE DATES We’ll be back on Sat 21 Mar (Cure Special), Sat 18 Apr and (usually) the third Saturday of the month through 2020.But for now…See you on the 15th!Love (and Pride) fromSimon, Jayney and the Spellbound team x x x x
