About this deal

This is the first book I've reviewed with lower than four stars. I usually enjoy most books, or if I dont, I just give it four star, but I'm sorry to say that this book dissapointed me. Yes, it was a fascinating idea. Yes, the world and species were intriguing. Yes, it was strange in a good way, and yes, the theory behind it was fab, BUT… The Neverending Story ( German: Die unendliche Geschichte) is a fantasy novel by German writer Michael Ende, published in 1979. The first English translation, by Ralph Manheim, was published in 1983. It was later adapted into a film series. What the book does best is its inventiveness. Bastian reads a book that's the same title as this book and the characters in the story need a hero from some unnamed outside world (Earth) to give the Childlike Empress a new name. But of course it can't be Bastian that they're talking about, right? It is. And it's innovative storytelling, but it's a hollow innovation, because Bastian is having all the fun. Not us. If the author had found a way for US (those who read the book) to have a role in the story, NOW THAT WOULD BE SMART! And genuinely innovative. I know that Clive Barker attempted such a book with "Mr. B Gone," but it didn't really turn out so good. Although the concept was there. In the season two finale of The Venture Bros., "Showdown at Cremation Creek (Part II)", Dean Venture embarks upon a fantastical, hallucinated adventure that closely borrows from The Neverending Story. The story begins with a lonely boy named Bastian and the strange book that draws him into the beautiful but doomed world of Fantastica. Only a human can save this enchanted place by giving its ruler, the Childlike Empress, a new name. But the journey to her tower leads through lands of dragons, giants, monsters, and magic, and once Bastian begins his quest, he may never return. As he is drawn deeper into Fantastica, he must find the courage to face unspeakable foes and the mysteries of his own heart.

Only the right name gives beings and things their reality. A wrong name makes everything unreal. That's what lies do.” Eventually the massively drawn out moral lesson / reconstruction of our hero's personality completes and the final scenes of reunion are quite touching and uplifting. An instantaneous leap into the magical . . . Energetic, innovative, and perceptive" —The Washington Post

Based on Michael Ende's beloved classic novel of the same name, Wolfgang Petersen's film adaptation is treasured by young and older folks alike. (It even had a fresh burst of social and cultural relevance after the touching homage to its theme song in the third season of Netflix's Stranger Things.) This beautiful story about the power of youth and the magic that comes with believing in oneself ended up also being the most expensive movie ever made in German cinema, even though the film itself is in English. The Childlike Empress (German: Die Kindliche Kaiserin) is the monarch of Fantasia, who resides in the capitol called the Ivory Tower (German: der Elfenbeinturm) in the heart of the realm. Although she is nominally the ruler of Fantasia, she rarely interacts with the outside world. Should she die, Fantasia and all Fantasians would cease to exist. The amulet known as the Auryn is her emblem, and those who wear it are her representatives. As explained by Morla the Aged One, her lifetime is not measured in years, but by names, which only the imagination of a human child can give her. When she begins to need a new name, she begins to fade away, causing the Nothing to appear in Fantasia. She sends Atreyu on the Great Quest, which brings Bastian to Fantasia, and Bastian gives her the name of Moon Child, which restores Fantasia.

He wanted to be loved for being just what he was. In this community of Yskalnari there was harmony, but no love.Neverending Story II, The". World of Spectrum. Archived from the original on 26 February 2014 . Retrieved 20 February 2014. Something else to note. Translations. In the English version of this novel, the style and the voice all lies with the translator, as opposed to the original author, Michael Ende. Seriously, consider the Holy Bible--there are many translations, and translations make a big difference in the reader's experience. I'm not saying that the translator got this book wrong (because I can't read this book in its original form, so I can't compare), but I am saying that a translator can't translate greatness. Consider this: read Stephen King's "It" and imagine somebody else wrote an adaptation based off the movie. They're going to be two different animals. Style--style is something that a translator can't translate perfectly, and I think that may be what happened here. That might explain why this novel feels like someone is telling a story told by someone else, rather than telling it themselves. And it gets a little chaotic with that way of thinking considering the subject matter of this novel . . . ugh! While it's easy to see why and how this became a beloved classic, admittedly, it can drag on for a bit TOO long, particularly in the second half. The NeverEnding Story was the first film adaptation of the novel. It was released in 1984, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Barret Oliver as Bastian, Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, and Tami Stronach as the Childlike Empress. It covers only the first half of the book, ending at the point where Bastian enters Fantastica (renamed "Fantasia" in the film), and features characters who look markedly different from how they are described in the book (most notably Bastian, who is very self-conscious about his weight in the book, but is depicted as slender in the film). [14] Ende, who was reportedly "revolted" by the film, [1] requested they halt production or change the film's name, as he felt it had ultimately and drastically deviated from his novel; when they did neither, he sued them and subsequently lost the case.

The film version of the Southern Oracle shares the generalities, but the first gate judges whether the person attempting to pass through it "feels his own worth"; if the person is doubtful of its ability to pass through safely, the two Sphinxes incinerate the visitor. The second gate is a mirror-like the novel's description, located in a snowy wilderness and there is ultimately no third gate. The Oracle itself is ultimately two blue glowing Sphinxes like the yellow sphinxes at the first gate and speaks in prose. As with the novel, the Oracle crumbles and dies after revealing the cure for the Childlike Empress' condition. Ocean Software released a text adventure in 1985 for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, and Atari 8-bit family. [23] The only thing in Fantasia known to have been hostile to Falkor is Gmork. He does not like to be alone, preferring close company with friends he knows will not betray his open heart. He watches and shelters the injured, as he did Atreyu after rescuing him from the Swamps of Sadness. The Southern Oracle (German: Das Südliche Orakel), also known as Uyulala ( Uyulála), is a mysterious all-knowing oracle guarded by three magical gates. She is depicted as a disembodied female voice who speaks in rhymed speech and otherwise sings ceaselessly to maintain her existence. To speak with Uyulala, one must pass through the three gates: From award-winning German author Michael Ende, The Neverending Story is a classic tale of one boy and the book that magically comes to life.

In the same Entertainment Weekly interview, Director Wolfgang Petersen pinpointed a major reason The NeverEnding Story still resonates so deeply even in the age of HD: "It took a lot of work to have it come out the way it did on film, and I believe that's what gives this movie such a great quality that can be appreciated after all these years. The creatures were so real how they had to interact with the actors, it wasn't like they were just standing in front of this green screen and pretending." In the first film, Falkor is voiced by Alan Oppenheimer. In the second, by an uncredited Donald Arthur. Finally, he is portrayed by Gord Robertson and voiced by William Hootkins.

Pre-order:

Tinys — a race of tiny people that ride on racing snails. They are quite sophisticated, but due to their size, they live in trees, erecting entire villages whose dwellings are connected by a huge number of ladders, slides, and stairways. Halfway through the book, Bastian becomes a character in The Neverending Story, in a world called Fantastica ("Fantasia" in the films, which is closer to the German original "Phantásien"). He is bestowed the magical amulet AURYN, which allows his wishes to be granted. As the story progresses, Bastian slowly loses his memories of the real world as his wishes carry him throughout Fantastica and change him into a completely different person. Deluded by the witch Xayide, Bastian moves to the Ivory Tower and tries to have himself proclaimed Emperor. The ceremony is interrupted by Atreyu, who is nearly killed by Bastian. The second 43-foot long Falkor deteriorated far worse than the original Falkor, in the sense that most of his frame and interior structure was removed leaving the skin and his fur, which in turn resulted in Falkor 2 to collapse on himself. Most of the pearl scales that were used on the second model also broke due to heavy handling as well as neglect. This Falkor's current state is virtually the same since the movie had been shot and he can be seen during the tour. Many have commented to the Filmstadt that this Falkor should be restored like the original.
