Arthur Bowers Multi-Purpose Compost offers two bags at a reasonable price and provides all the nutrients plants need for their first 4-6 weeks. This is highly unlikely but there is a very remote possibility that a severe deficiency in one element can remain after the fertiliser has been added. Containing a nutrient-enhanced formula as well as a wetting agent, this compost is suitable for the majority of plants, including those in containers and hanging baskets. It’s highly absorbent, so is intended to hold water and nutrients for longer, helping stop plants from drying out. It contains a relatively even blend of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, helping encourage both root development and flowering. Many manufacturers are attempting to lower the peat content in their compost, due to its negative impact on the environment. However, if the compost doesn’t state that it’s ‘peat free compost’ or at least ‘low in peat’, you should presume that it has a high peat content.Used correctly Grow More Water Soluble Fertilizers can provide an attractive economic return on investment over and above that obtained from soil applied fertilizers. This balanced formulation ensures that plants receive an even supply of nutrients to support overall growth and development. The texture is relatively neutral – not too sandy or soggy, and there are some additional components included, like wood fibre. The wood fibre comes from FSC certified forests which means it’s been sustainably grown/sourced. Soil bacteria will use some of the fertiliser for their own growth and wellbeing, which will encourage the plant to develop faster and healthier. According to some customers’ experiences, this compost can deliver mixed results depending on what’s being grown – it seems that it can help broad beans, carrots and peas to thrive, but may not be as effective on tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. It is best to apply fish, blood and bone before plants are actively growing, in March, which is an ideal month. This will give enough feed for 4 to 6 weeks, which is enough time for the plants to start growing. You can repeat dosage in early summer to give the plants an additional boost.
