Our concern is that the 'instant' results that may sometimes come out of using the Gina Ford method, or other similar 'parent-led' systems, can distract people from the long-term negative impact on a child's emotional development, or from the increased risks of SIDS, or the negative implications for health of the resultant failure to maintain breastfeeding (don't forget that the World Health Organisation advises on-demand breastfeeding continue for at least 2 years). Extinction sleep training (or the cry-it-out method) was first recommended in an era when it was believed that crying was good for babies. It is largely practised in America, Australia and the UK. Parts of the method are based on the idea that you can let your baby cry it out for long periods of time without intervention, but this is no longer recommended: 10 minutes is the maximum amount of time that you should leave a crying baby. For each new baby, I dug out that Gina Ford roadmap and by the fifth kid I pretty much knew it off by heart. The idea is that your baby should be able to sleep through the night by eight to 10 weeks. Plus, this method allows you to plan your day around your baby’s feeds and naps, giving you time to do whatever you need to or catch up on sleep. It's worth noting however that the NHS recommends starting a routine after three months.

Gina Ford has come to the rescue with her answer: the key to a good night's sleep for the whole family lies in teaching parents to understand the changing sleep needs of their growing baby. This book informs and reassures parents, dispelling many common myths and anxieties and offering practical solutions that work. Bedtime fading. This technique helps you identify the best bedtime for your little one. Gradually, you’ll shift your baby’s bedtime later each night (by about 10 to 15 minutes) until you find the sweet spot when your baby is tired enough to fall asleep on their own. These are the various stages of sleep patterns and feeding that your baby will go through during the first 6 months: But, as the critics cry, having had no babies of her own, how can she really know what it is like to have a baby cry it out?

Five Life commissioned a programme called Gina Ford: Who Are You To Tell Us?, which aired on 4 March 2007. [7] Mumsnet libel [ edit ]

I got to see what worked well, and what didn’t work well, in a real, tender, dirty-dishes-and-shouty-parents-and-wet-beds kind of proximity. In two recent surveys the Daily Mail listed Gina as one of the most influential women in the field of health in Britain today and The Times listed her as one of the top fifty people who influence the way we eat, exercise and think about ourselves. The Independent newspaper, in the feature ‘Power of one’, describes her determination to change attitudes of parenting this century. She is still as hands-on as ever, which allows her to have a unique and sympathetic understanding of the problems parents face and, more importantly, how they might solve them. It took me getting to near 40 and having a severe depression to begin to do what she is doing at 22. Thank goodness she won't have to wait so long to take possession of her own life! I was determined to do it right, and I remember feeling so frustrated when Barnaby didn’t quite fit into her daily plan. One of the most helpful things to know from this book: "No baby under 4 months should be allowed to stay awake for longer than two hours at a stretch. Care should also be taken not to overstimulate the baby 30 minutes prior to being put to bed." (p 41) Keep in mind that the routines are strict. You’ll also need your partner on board with the idea – it’s a lot for one person to manage and you will need a break from time to time. Why is Gina Ford controversial?

It's interesting that I don't find very much information on how to put newborn to sleep (probably because they sleep all the time???). But mine doesn't. I just don't have baby that sleeps all the time. She's 3 weeks old this Thursday. Usually the crying before sleep lasts around 10-30 minutes and diminishes over time if you are consistent with this approach. It usually lasts 5-10 minutes in a baby under 6 weeks old.

For me, it comes down to parents' attitudes to the baby and to parenthood, the extent to which they are willing to let these influence their lifestyles, and for how long. There is no doubt in my mind that pretty much every parent loves their child and wants what is best for them. However, it seems to me that many are intent on reconstructing their lives as much as possible and as soon as possible, exactly as they were before their new arrival. I have met mothers who refused to breastfeed their baby, or ended doing so after a few weeks, so that they could leave the infant with a minder as soon as possible, mainly so that they could go out drinking and clubbing again. I try not to be judgemental of other parents, but some people make it really really hard. The cry-it-out method, also known as the extinction method, is a sleep training method where you let your baby cry on their own, without your intervention, until they fall asleep. There are various different methods of sleep training, including bedtime fading and the Ferber method. Bedtime fading and the Ferber method are ‘controlled crying methods’ with parental intervention.

However, babies respond to structure and predictability, and implementing a feed, play, sleep cycle from early on can help. From three months of age, your little one starts to become more switched on. If you haven’t already, now is the time to introduce sleep associations – such as bath, perhaps a baby massage, book and bed – to set them on the right path. I knew when to leave them, when to go to them and when to know that today, it wasn’t going to go according to plan. Remember, sleep is actually a skill that needs to be learned. If you do the hard yards early on, you will reap the rewards into toddlerhood and beyond.

By following nine different routines that match your baby’s natural rhythms, this method claims to avoid the issues that bring on endless tears such as hunger and tiredness. Fans of the method say it can help your baby sleep for a full 12 hours from just a few weeks old, but you’ll need a fair bit of willpower and self-discipline. So, is it right for you? What is the Gina Ford method? The introduction of solid foods was too early for us in this book. We waited til 6 months to introduce solid foods with our baby. But then we took Gina Ford's advice on the topic, with much success.
