About this deal

From the start I was hooked drawn into occupied and war torn Paris by the seemingly authentic details.

Sin embargo, lo que me ha desgarrado ha sido la frustración y el dolor de Sarah, que ve como el tiempo le ha robado a su hijo. The narrative moves between these two timelines and from alternating perspectives with the first third focusing on Jean-Luc and Charlotte and the lead-up to the decision that sees them flee Paris. Although I was a bit rattled by the leveling of criminal charges against Jean-Luc, who fled France with his girlfriend and baby in tow.

Nieko ypatingo nesitikėjau, nes ta tema jų labai daug prirašyta ir jau jos man darėsi panašios viena į kitą. There are four adults who love this little boy Sam and I couldn't wait to see how they would accommodate his new reality.

In 1953 Santa Cruz, CA, Jean-Luc and Charlotte Beauchamps are the proud parents of Sam, the all-American kid. The love that a parent can hold for their child is truly explored in Druart’s narrative and I found myself quickly absorbed in this story. While Paris Slept originates in Paris during the Second World War, moving on to both Paris and California in the 1950s.

In 1953 Jean-Luc and Charlotte are living, with Sam, in Santa Cruz, California, thrilled to be in America. The characters are very one dimensional, the plot is hard to follow not because it's complex, but due to the lack of anything really happening. A truly beautiful and powerful debut, it is haunted with exquisite emotion, but that emotion comes with an uplifting feeling of hope. While Paris Slept made me think and cry and rage and smile at mankind's capacity for both beautiful, selfless love and terrible, heartbreaking cruelty. Hachette Australia acknowledges and pays our respects to the past, present and future Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A heartrending story told from the perspectives of two families living very different lives, it is also one of hope amid tragedy. When the truth of what Jean Luc does to help Sarah becomes apparent its a shock as you recognise his resolve and bravery, the danger he has placed himself and Charlotte in and at times the tension is palpable. The story is told in (mostly) two places and time periods, Spring 1944, during the German occupation of Paris, and 1953 in the USA and in France.

Roll back to 1944 and a twenty-one-year-old Jean-Luc is reluctantly working for the SNCF, now controlled by the Nazi’s, in the fourth year of occupation in Paris. Exploring the strength of family ties, and what it really means to love someone unconditionally, this debut novel will capture your heart. The story is a love story between parents and child, more than the power of the husband and wife relationship. Also, the police sorts who question Jean-Luc in Santa Cruz seemed like comic book cops, no rounded edges, characters that would have been just as familiar in Nazi attire. This was such a great read, one that I thoroughly enjoyed and that tugged at my heartstrings in a million ways. And when she was released she went to find that he child was happy with the foster parents so she decide it's ok, I'll leave him there.
