That world-changing seven inch single didn’t just launch the Coventry-based 2 TONE record label, but also kicked off a full-scale Ska revival, initiating the most exciting (if short-lived) youth movement of 1979-1981. The SPELLBOUND SKA SPECIAL, at Komedia on SATURDAY 18th MAY, will be celebrating the sounds and subculture of that era by playing non-stop Ska & Reggae classics by THE SPECIALS, MADNESS, THE BEAT, THE SELECTER, BAD MANNERS, THE BODYSNATCHERS, UB40 & more. (Don’t worry, we draw the line at bloody “Red Red Wine”.) We'll relax our music policy to include the sort of vintage tunes you'd have heard at a ska disco at the time (think Prince Buster, Dave & Ansil Collins, Desmond Dekker, The Pioneers, Skatalites, Jimmy Cliff etc). And we’ll maybe throw in the odd tune by bands who weren’t Ska, but you were probably also listening to if you were a 2 Tone kid (The Jam, Dexys, Secret Affair, The Clash, The Lambrettas and so on).2 Tone wasn’t just a label, but a genuinely a way of life: anti-racist, anti-Thatcher and anti-war, pro-integration, pro-dancing and pro-fun. 2 Tone was also, a way of DRESSING: suedehead or skinhead hairdos, Trilby hats, wraparound sunglasses, Fred Perry or Ben Sherman shirts, skinny ties, Harringtons or Crombies or flying jackets, braces, ball-bustingly tight jeans or Sta-Prests, white socks, and tasseled loafers or Dr Marten shoes. And lots of black-and-white checks. Obviously we’re not enforcing a dress code, but if you’ve got any of that stuff in the locker, it would be amazing if you’d dust if off for the occasion. (And if you haven’t, there’s plenty of time to get on eBay…)You can buy advance tickets for £5 here: https://tinyurl.com/spellboundska2019 or call the Box Office on 01273 647100 (And please RSVP to the Facebook event...) THE FACTSVenue: Komedia Studio Bar, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN (see http://www.komedia.co.uk/brighton for detailed travel info) Opening hours: 9:00pm-3:00amAdmission: £5 standard, or £4 with flyer/NUS/jobseekerAdvance tickets: £5 from https://tinyurl.com/spellboundska2019 01273 647100When: (usually) on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH ARRIVE EARLY! We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, ARRIVE EARLY!CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK! Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £3.50, exclusively for Spellbound!THE UNDERPANTS SONG! If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of something strong! YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.FUTURE DATES We’ll be back on Sat 15 Jun and (usually) the third Saturday of the month through 2019.But for now…See you on the 18th!Love (and Pride) fromSimon, Jayney and the Spellbound team x x x x
