Digitally there are no compression issues, the source is clean and bright, and that beautiful grain structure give a wonderful filmic presentation. It doesn't actually sound like they're just rhyming off words from a script and it adds some authenticity to the group. Marshall was clearly still learning his profession but looking back on 'Dog Soldiers' two decades later still brings a massive smile to my face.

version offers only the commentary tracks on the UHD, and it confines the rest of the extras to the Blu-ray. I tell everyone who'll listen that this is the best Werewolf Film ever made, the sfx are excellent, hardly any if any cgi, but the werewolves look fantastic. Combat is a short film directed by Marshall and photographed by McCurdy that literalizes the war between the sexes at a British pub. There’s a good sense of scale and pushback in the woods and the cabin in the film opens up quite a bit more. She takes a different approach to analyzing Dog Soldiers, demonstrating how it’s as much influenced by the slasher genre as it is by previous werewolf films. Neil Marshall’s ‘making of’ insight hits an hour or so, and I think there’s a mix of old and new interviews entwined into a single package.

Second Sight’s 4K Ultra HD release of Dog Soldiers is a two-disc set that includes a Region B-locked Blu-ray with a 1080p copy of the film. McKidd is pretty good -- though not as charismatic as Pertwee -- as a young man with strong leadership qualities, which are only able to bloom when he's being menaced by werewolves. I think I saw it a year or two after it came out and thought it was definitely thought it was one of the better Werewolf movies. Detail is terrific, there is texture to skin, clothing has weave, dirt and grime on the soldiers, wood grain, foliage, tree bark, blood splatter, peeling paint, everything is clear and distinct, with the caveat of the inherent source softness.

From a technical stance 'Dog Soldiers' may not necessarily live up to some of Marshall's later works but for pure fun, action packed, balls to the walls horror, this little low-budget werewolf flick is really difficult to beat. Thanks to the usual stellar work from Fidelity in Motion, the bit rate hasn’t suffered from including all of the extras on the disc, either. Without transport or communications, the group is forced to retreat to a farmhouse to wait for the full moon to disappear at dawn.

Armed with a new transfer and bonus features, this is bringing in a similar disc to the Second Sight 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray coming out in the United Kingdom at the very same time. Clearly Neil Marshall likes ensembles and he also likes monsters and I'm not sure he's ever really been able to better his version of the werewolf. While you’ll never match the beauty of An American Werewolf in London, Dog Soldiers has moments of natural drama as well, a particular stand-out scene involves Megan playing Debussy’s Clair de Lune which adds class as it’s juxtaposed with the howls of those ‘natural’ predators outside, and the gleam of a full moon lingering in the back.Factory attempted to rectify those problems for their 2015 Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, but the results were controversial, to say the least. I hadn’t revisited the film in a while, and it caught me by surprise how many great moments there are here. SS has done a variety of styles in the past, Scanavo, Digi-books and digi-paks so not sure what we'll get.
