About this deal

It's seriously difficult to talk about this book without being moved to tears. Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Thomas and Marguerite's marriage ended up being this, at least for a while (although the "arranged" part is downplayed, because he asked her father and she agreed to the suit almost immediately once she saw him). And so you may not be happy, exactly, if you let Buehlman lure you across France with Delphine and Thomas, if you face with them the horrors unleashed by Hell upon a population that is left to question whether some great sin of theirs has earned all this wrath and punishment. But you will, indisputably, feel as though you have gone on the journey. In this book the reader takes every step along with its flawed and remarkable characters as they make their slow and frightened way to Avignon to see if they can save what remains of humanity… and possibly their own souls, too. God Was My Copilot: Almost literally. As it turns out, Delphine, the girl Thomas traveled across the countryside of France with, very much is an incarnation of Jesus and by extension, God.

After a while things go very, very badly...we finally have the answer to the "MYSTERY" unveiled before our "very eyes" (though I assume most have already spotted it) and we get the "gritty" climax. My first impression of the three main characters: the girl annoyed me, the monk bored me and I damn-right despised Thomas. And yet, they grew on me! With all of their flaws and shortcomings, they felt so real, they faced their fears and desires, they changed and sacrificed so much for each other. I truly admired their character development which was perfectly paced and actually quite believable! Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite Thomas' angry, nihilistic demeanor and constant insults, he genuinely cares for his traveling companions and will defend them at all costs. This book was an unexpectedly wonderful and terrifying find. Like I said before, if you are squeamish, or shy away from books with rape or graphic violence, put this book on your never read list. But for those of you like me that are fans of dark and gritty fantasy, definitely add this one to your list. It is well worth the read. Slightly subverted at the market in Paris full of foreign merchants, which reminds Delphine that there are other parts of the world where things are less terrible.Historical Domain Character: Pope Clement VI, depicted as far more ruthless than he was in real life. This is revealed to be due to the real Pope being replaced by a demonic doppelganger, who the protagonists must face in the final act. The author took the time to get a lot of the historical setting correct, and this went a long way for someone like me who, predominantly until last year, was solely a military history reader. In addition, the story itself is excellently told, with multiple perspectives without getting confusing and relatively original, in my opinion. Thou Shalt Not Kill: After Thomas kills his companions to protect Delphine in the opening, she commands him to "never kill anyone ever again". Though he makes no promises, he does avoid killing humans for the most part afterward. When he does kill people, there are usually consequences for doing so. Eat the Dog: When times are tough on the road, Thomas suggests that perhaps he and the others should eat their mule. Delphine refuses to hear of it. Break the Cutie: Unsurprisingly happens to the pure-hearted Delphine. The death of Mathieu is what nearly sends her over the edge. Fearing that her very presence puts everyone she cares about in danger, she splits off from Thomas and attempts to go to Avignon by herself.

Frank Nichols, a disgraced professor, receives a letter by mail from his aunt that he has never met before. She is dying of cancer and has left him her house in Georgia and she has tasked him with selling it and keeping the profits for himself. She is adamant that he does NOT move there. Ignoring her plea not to live there he and his wide Eudora leave Chicago and make there way to Georgia and their new home that they lovingly name Canary House. Demon Lords and Archdevils: The main antagonists of the story are Bel-Phegor, Ra'um and Baal'Zebuth, each Princes of Hell tasked by Lucifer to conquer the earth in his name. It's not often that I pull a three-lolcat review, but, this book was epic and deserves all the lolcats in the world to describe its awesomeness. I rarely type in all capital letters, but let's face it, the book was...

I LOVE roadtrip stories and I LOVE plague novels. There is something cozy about the contrictive, almost claustrophobic vibe, the fear of absolutely everything, the ingenuity it usually takes the characters (making homes, leaving again, finding food and medicine etc), the realisation that no matter how devastating a catastrophy is happening to a person, what other humans do to them will be worse. I really enjoyed the character Thomas, a fallen knight that has been traveling with some quite despicable brigands. But then he meets a girl; an orphaned girl living alone with her father’s corpse. But, something about this girl is different. She sees things and knows things that are beyond explanation. I absolutely love the dynamic between Thomas and this girl. I hate to say too much more for fear of spoilers. But trust me, this is a journey I won’t soon forget.

Rugged Scar: Thomas has a very noticeable one on his cheek where he took an arrow to the face at Crécy.
