The title is a case in point: "Maigret's Little Joke" is not a very felicitous rendering of Maigret S'Amuse. However, he and his wife decide to remain incognito in Paris and with the help of newspaper reports and radio broadcasts he is able to keep abreast of the crime. The dramas offer no introduction or background information on Maigret, so a listener unfamiliar with his stories may find the occasional focus on his foibles and mannerisms puzzling.
