About this deal

Firstly, the Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology that uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyse hurdles (such as slope, access, and proximity to markets) to the active management of woodlands. The methodology uses the Forestry Commission’s Managed Woodland Headline Performance Indicator dataset to identify unmanaged woodlands. Finally, further support and advice is provided to woodland owners by helping them evaluate their woodland against the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) using the myForest Woodland Assessor developed by the Sylva Foundation with the aim to produce a UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) compliant Woodland Management Plan. The Tree Growth Project seeks to collect regular growth data to improve our understanding of the response of trees to changes in woodland management and climate change across the country. Volunteers take regular measurements using growth bands and upload the data via Forest Lab. Read our tree growth case study. A Forest Agent Account - for those who own or manage multiple properties containing forested land (or land which they wish to use for forest creation). For non-FC woodland plan templates that don’t match the Forestry Commission’s woodland plan template in structure or composition, use this cover sheet ( MS Word Document, 36.5 KB) that states the UKFS criteria being assessed and provides a consistent framework for the Forestry Commission to review the plan. Non-FC woodland plan templates are not eligible for funding to prepare a woodland management plan through Countryside Stewardship.

Features are an important part of any forest creation or management plan, ensuring each feature is mapped accurately is vital to developing an effective maps and plans which are appropriate for any range of desired activities.

The UK imports 80% of its wood products and only 59% of UK woodlands are under active management. Many formerly coppiced woodlands have fallen out of regular harvest cycles, are more prone to diseases and pests, and contain a mixture of small, medium and large diameter trees with few markets.

Following the devastating impacts of Storm Arwen, the second webinar 'An Introduction to Management Planning' was rearranged to allow us to answer queries regarding the impacts of Storm Arwen on woodland management along with guests from the Forestry Commission and Euro Forest. Further information on the remaining webinars can be found here: FREE Woods into Management Webinars – RDI Associates (ruraldevelopment.org.uk) Slide from webinar 1: Sustainable Woodland Management - how and why do woodlands benefit A woodland management plan gives land managers a structured way to plan and organise the sustainable management of woodland to a common industry standard.

Sylva Foundation is well-known for its innovative land-management platforms including the Woodland Manager tool in myForest (used by more than 6,000 owners and land managers), Woodland Wildlife Toolkit, Deer Manager, and the online auction platform NatureBid. In Britain there is an estimated 700,000ha of under-managed woodlands. In addition, as one of Europe’s least forested countries, the UK needs to fulfil its potential in providing a meaningful contribution towards the country’s timber needs.
