A desiccant dehumidifier differs in that it uses an absorbent material or chemical dessicant to extract moisture from the air. This means they can operate efficiently in lower temperatures, down to just 1°C, and are useful for garages, basements, conservatorys, or unheated rooms in the house over winter. However, they're usually more expensive both upfront and in terms of running costs than a compressor dehumidifier, so unless you're looking to remove damp at cold temperatures you're generally best off with a compressor model. Smart Humidity Mode will be the one you use the most and, when pressed, it will set the target humidity levels to 55%. To test the unit, we set the target to 40%, as levels stood at 45% at the time. You can do this by repeatedly pressing the same button until the desired number flashes on the display. There is also CO mode, which just means your dehumidifier will run continuously. Over the course of an hour, the humidity dropped by 2% to 43%, with a good amount of water collected in the water tank (it promises to remove up to 12L a day). It didn't take long after this to reach 40%, after which it automatically powered down. What do you do if you already produce some of the quietest and most energy-efficiency dehumidifiers on the market? The control panel on Arete One has simple and clearly laid out controls. The buttons that you use most often are larger; the buttons that you hardly ever use are small. I tested it overnight in an unheated, external utility room that’s horribly prone to condensation, and it did a solid job of keeping the drips at bay. This is not an oversight, but rather Meaco's gesture at sustainability having heard that customers ordinarily don't use the attachment. It's a nice touch, and the tank is roomy enough that you won't worry about repeated trips to empty it. The brand new Arete range of compressor dehumidifiers are the latest innovation in the line of ultra-quiet dehumidifies from Meaco. First up, it's worth making clear that this small dehumidifier has a low extraction rate compared to many others on our list. The ProBreeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier can extract just 0.5L of moisture from the air per day. For comparison, the lowest extraction rate offered within the MeacoDry Arete One range is 10L of moisture extraction per day. I tested the MeacoDry Arete One dehumidifier in a couple of different areas throughout my home to get a good feel of exactly what it could do. For context, I live in a Victorian terrace, so as you can imagine, dampness and mould can be an issue, especially when it’s been raining a lot. It's a bit of a bonus that this dehumidifier also comes with an air purifier function –something most dehumidifier's don't offer – and I found it worked really well. It’s definitely worth adding in that HEPA filter which you’ll find included in the box when the dehumidifier is delivered.
It’s certainly an effective dehumidifier. In a small bedroom with damp and mould issues, I saw the humidity fall from 67% to 52% within a couple of hours, and I had to force the target down to 45% to keep the purifier busy.

The Arete One also has an automatic shut-off function when its water tank is full. At this point, the unit will beep and a red light will be displayed to alert you that the tank needs emptying. This is a useful feature that cheaper dehumidifiers tend not to have, and gives peace of mind that your home's flooring isn't going to be damaged by any overspill. There's also a small window on the front of the dehumidifier that shows you the current water levels.
