About this deal

Governor Suetonius has been caught off guard by the strength of Boudica's force, and must now race to Londinium with a mounted escort led by Prefect Cato, fully aware that they have little hope of standing against a rebellion on this scale, even if the army following in their wake reaches the city in time. As Suetonius, Cato and their small escort fight their way across country, Cato's worries are increased by his concern for his family in Londinium - and his fears that his old friend Macro may have finally fought his last battle in Camulodunum. What lies in store for this troublesome outpost of the Empire? As of today, he lives happily in Norfolk, United Kingdom along with his wife Caroline Scarrow and two sons. In the year 2006, Simon was selected as the Writer in Residence at the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys. He says that he was honored to have been accepted for the prestigious post. After that, they take up a mission which is full of conspiracies and threatens to endanger the life of the Emperor. I go through genre phases, and historical fiction and Greek/Roman philosophy and history is where my mind was focused for a while. I finished studying stoicism and decided to read this novel by Scarrow that has been in my Kindle library for a couple of years. I am glad I did. You are also treated to the inner workings of the Roman Army and the thought processes involved, you see a sense of forlorn hoplesness and foreboding of what is to come within the Romans, afterall they are facing an army in the thousands The tales follow the life and careers of Centurion Lucius Cornelius Macro and Prefect Quintus Licinius Cato. It’s the year AD60 and both protagonists are once again in Britannia, tasked in maintaining Rome’s tenuous hold of the province.

Simon Scarrow is a British author of historical fictional novels. He was born on October 03, 1962. Simon’s novels have been published in the USA and translation all around the world. Simon Scarrow is a Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author. Facing disaster, Cato prepares his next move. Dare he hope that Macro - battle-scarred and fearless - has escaped the bloodthirsty rebels? For there is only one man Cato trusts by his side as he faces the military campaign of his life. And the future of the Empire in Britannia hangs in the balance.

TheEagles of the Empireseries centers upon two main protagonists,Quintus Licinius CatoandLucius Cornelius Macro, who are bothRoman soldiers. Macro, a veteran with nearly 15 years’ service (at the start of the first novel) in the Roman Army, has recently been appointed to the Centurion. Cato is in his teen years, grew up in the Imperial Palace as a slave, and at the start of the series joins the Eagles as Macro’s Optio.

This, I have to say, is also the first in the series that I can remember ending in a definite cliffhanger ... This age is not known for any type of Geneva treaty or piety, the Roman pietas is the sense of loyalty not any type of kindness The tale is set in the year AD 42, and we find Macro in Germania with the 2nd Legion, when a new recruit will be introduced as second in command to Macro, his name being Cato. It’s not strong on female characters, though there is one of significance, but as it’s mainly about Roman legions and their barbarian warrior opponents that won’t be a surprise. The Roman army are made aware of Boudica leading a rebellion, where thousands of rebels are joining her to rid the country of the invading Romans. Bound together more by their hatred of Rome than anything else, the rebel tribes take brutal and bloody revenge on the Roman settlements they pass through. Whipped up into a religious frenzy by their Druids, their treatment of prisoners is especially cruel and merciless. Those who are squeamish may wish to skip a couple of the scenes. Just as I expected the book exists entirely within the army in ways that just don't make sense. And a very modern army too. Generals appear as career army instead of senators serving merely one stage in their career. All centurions are grizzled veterans raised from the ranks and the suggestion that Cato could be appointed directly to the position is treated as absurd despite an imperial command. Pretty much everything that exists outside the army is a skeletal sketch or vague caricature. If it's not army, it doesn't matter.
