About this deal

Who is your favourite hero in a book? This might get a few eye rolls, because it’s from a series that I illustrate, but as far as Children’s book hero’s go, you can’t get much better than Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy. He’s just everything that you would want a hero to be, immensely powerful, over confident, full of humour, and immaculately dressed. Tilda's world is just as she likes it – until, one day, it turns completely upside down! From the bestselling Big Bright Feelings series by Tom Percival

Look at this trailer to promote the ‘Big Bright Feelings’ series of books. Could you create an animated version of Tilda? Watch a ‘read aloud’ video based on this book. Could you record your own narrated version of the story? Tilda's world is just as she likes it . . . until one day, it turns completely UPSIDE DOWN. All of a sudden, everything is topsy-turvy, and nothing feels right. Things that were once easy now seem incredibly challenging. Can Tilda discover a new way to approach her problems and believe in herself?

Synopsis

Oliver Jeffers. For very similar reasons to Jon Klassen, I really admire Oliver Jeffers’ ability to communicate a huge amount of emotion or mood with the bare minimum of marks. I always seem to end up going with the illustrative equivalent of the ‘Wall of Sound’ in music production!

It is positive, entertaining and such a well-written story that children will relate to. What is so good is that Tilda brushes herself down and decides to try again. It also refrains from it being a sob story or self-centred story. It does in a fun way, promote reslience and that there will be a better day. It could also have a positive impact on children in a way that may just make them feel good inside and out and ready to try again, as Tilda does.Read up to ‘Everything was just right. Until one day, Tilda’s world turned…’ and then write a new version of the story from that point. I used to love reading to my own children as part of their bedtime routine. I was so excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to read a CBeebies Bedtime Story. — Rob Burrow Reading and literacy are so important. It doesn’t matter what your disability is, reading is accessible to everyone. Anyone can enjoy reading and develop a love of books and bedtime stories, just like me and my family."

Tilda Tries Again: A Big Bright Feelings Book: Big Bright

The youngsters directed their father from the TV gallery, helped count down and shouted ‘action’ when the cameras started rolling. Perhaps an odd choice as a teenager, but I went through a stage of reading as many Mary Wesley books as I could get my hands on. She just seemed to be so skilled at portraying people of all ages and walks of life. As a teenager I marvelled at the fact that she could so clearly write about what it felt like to be that age, being as she had her first novel published aged 71. Of course now that I’m 35 and can still remember EXACTLY what it felt like to be 16 it doesn’t seem that unlikely anymore – ah, the follies of youth. What was your favourite book when you were a child?Tim and Tobias is the first book in the ‘Flight Path to Reading’ reading scheme and was written by Sheila K. McCullagh. It was the first book that I remember loving and was (guess what) atmospheric, magical and slightly dark. The colours in the cover are bright and catch kid's eyes straigh away. Good marketing strategy! They are in for a treat. Another tremendous triumph from Tom Percival with Tilda Tries Again - dare I say it might even be my Big Bright Feelings picture book yet! I love Tilda, she is full of life and very likeable. The story is well written, with a good message to send to children. I really like the illustrations too. Percival's digital illustrations use transitions from grayscale to color to create symbolic meaning and have psychological depth, deftly capturing a child's experience of trauma. An accessible entrance into the world of social-emotional skills
