Encounters Deaf Shorts 2019 - Picturehouse at Science and Media Museum - Bradford

ENCOUNTERS DEAF SHORTS is a stunning programme of shorts curated by the ENCOUNTERS short film festival that showcases D/deaf experiences around the world. This year’s programme gives a nod to the centenary of the suffragette movement with all leading roles being played by D/deaf women, and featuring female-led D/deaf stories from as far afield as Australia and Nepal to Europe and the UK. Each year ENCOUNTERS short film festival curates a fantastic programme of shorts with the aim of normalising onscreen D/deafness, with the ENCOUNTERS DEAF SHORTS AWARD given to the best film of the showcase.Last year the winner of the Deaf Shorts Award was The Silent Child by CHRIS OVERTON, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Short Film in 2018. This year’s winner is To Know Him by TES EVANS, a director to keep your eye on - his first feature is currently in development with iFeatures, and is set to be the first UK feature made entirely in sign language. The programme is suitable for both hearing and non-hearing audiences, and includes descriptive subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing. The Last Time I Saw YouDir: Damian McLindonAustralia 20187 mins 20 secsA sixteen-year-old Muslim refugee confronts a trio of mean girls at school. You’re Lost, Little GirlDir: Cédric BourgeoisBelgium 201720 minsAnna, a deaf young woman, lives with her grandmother in a campground.
