About this deal

This book may be close to home for some children, particularly children who live with their grandparents and may make them sad - as a child, losing my grandparents was something I really feared because I am incredibly close to them.

I could see what the author/artist was trying to accomplish, but somehow I didn't find the narrative as poignant or eloquent as some others. This story is a metaphor for death and loss with Syd experiencing and coping with the loss of his grandad.

Cudowna wyspa dziadka” to wartościowa książka dla najmłodszych czytelników, których zachwycą nie tylko przepiękne kolorowe ilustracje, ale również zaskakująca historia. While I respect that, and am glad for those who find solace in Benji Davies' story, I have to confess that something about the formulation here just didn't work for me. Sure to provide comfort to young children struggling to understand loss, Benji Davies’s tale is a sensitive and beautiful reminder that our loved ones live on in our memories long after they’re gone.

From a young age he was often to be found painting at the kitchen table, a scene which can still be seen to this day. Visiting Grandad’s house at the bottom of the garden again, he finds it just the same as it’s always been — except that Grandad isn’t there anymore. Cheerful cinematic spreads invite young readers into all sorts of intriguing places, from a cozy attic full of curiosities like a turtle teapot, to a vast ship's deck, to the deep jungle of an island paradise. No entanto, presumi que se tratava de mais uma pequena fantasia, que fazia a ligação com a fantasia maior que foi a viagem de Cid e do Avô até à ilha maravilhosa. It's almost so subtle that you read it and are like - wait, am I a downer for thinking the grandfather died? The tropical paradise they discover serves as a substitute for Grandad's final resting place, and Syd sails back to the 'real' world alone. Sure to provide comfort to young children struggling to understand loss, Benji Davies's tale is a sensitive and beautiful reminder that our loved ones live on in our memories long after they're gone. Com linguagem simples e desenhos de uma ternura inigualável, vemos o quanto pode ser doloroso despedirmo-nos de alguém de quem gostamos muito.

Booklist Online 'As with The Storm Whale, Davies offers a story of loneliness and togetherness distinguished by understated, deeply felt emotions and a nautical milieu. Some children may be happy with the fact that Grandad has stayed on the island and is having a nice time while others may be able to use the book to help them cope with their own experiences of loss. We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child. The immense and heavy subject of death is handled so honestly and blatantly for children in this book, that it almost become less of a sadness and more of a beautiful fact of life. Myślę, że każde dziecko zrozumie tę historię na swój sposób a my jako rodzice/nauczyciele, możemy jedynie pomóc im ją przyswoić.
