About this deal

My review was originally going to be from playing in handheld mode, but let’s be honest here, it’s a bit of a pig aiming the joy-con on such a small screen. Mad Bullets is a typical title I had never heard of, and it was only through my own ventures, that I found this title and have to say that this is one of those gems that you need to look into. The game was released in 2019, it’s 2021 at the time of this review so I hold little hope the developer will revisit this now which is a shame. In this case, it shines as you point the joy-con at the screen and hit ZR to fire, R to reload (it’s mirrored if you do a two-player). Since the days of Mad Dog McCree back in the arcades, then on Sega CD, there’s never really been a decent automated western shooter.

Not only that but each level has secondary objectives to complete such as shooting 8 incoming bullets, shooting 15 crates or boxes or shooting a certain number of enemies. The reticle was either pinned to the top and bottom of the screen with next to no room for movement on screen to aim rendering the game completely unplayable. Upon starting your Wild West rampage, you’ll need to calibrate your Joy-Cons by shooting in the centre of the screen and the upper left-hand corner. If playing in singleplayer, you’re only ever going to have one Joy-Con activated unless you decide to dual weld. Mad Bullets is an old school arcade-type in that you’ll head through town and all you need to focus on is your aim and shooting those darn varmints. This system must be updated to the latest system software and connected to the internet with automatic downloads enabled, and it must have enough storage to complete the download. There has been various attempts at reviving this style of game with Wii-motes and Playstation Move controllers, but non truly captured the speed and flickering white screen accuracy of the genre pioneers. You can literally plug a mouse into the switch and use it, and it has a touch screen, however the controls are solely restricted to motion controls only with Joycon on the Switch version.

Eventually, I found the best way to play the game was very subtle movements and not to point the joy-con as if it were a TV remote. It’s not that the game is hectic in terms of tempo, but there can sometimes be quite a lot of characters on screen at one time. After your payment has been processed, the content will be downloaded to the applicable system linked to your Nintendo Account, or your Nintendo Network ID in the case of Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family systems. There were times where my sight would go out of bounds and didn’t reflect on-screen what I was doing with the controller. The characters are slightly animated, but they are supposed to represent wooden boards – when you shoot them, they explode in fragments, and it’s pretty effective. I couldn’t take screenshots or video capture anymore as when you’re using one Joy-Con for singleplayer, the other one becomes inactive straight away.

To start the purchasing process, it is necessary to sign in with the Nintendo Account and the Nintendo Network ID. However, these are small issues that can be easily overcome, and they don’t ruin the main experience. That’s what you would have heard in the days of Red Dead Redemption, but for the modern world, it would be more like “step away from the keyboard and put the Café Bombón down”.Everything from the later 3D releases such as Virtual Cop to the to the classics like Operation Wolf. Forget about men with no names, folk looking for redemption or new sheriffs in town – this is all about shooting stuff quickly and efficiently as possible. Oh, I forgot to mention that there are 3 locations, 60 levels, 3 minigames, about 200 missions, trendy dubstep music, fully destroyable environmental objects, all mixed in a frantic shooter.

My niggle with this was incoming projectiles on the far left or right of the screen as when reloading, the reticle would go back to the centre, and you’d eventually take a bullet to the face. The reticle feels floaty on screen compared to the movement of the controller and suffers severely from drift. A stray bullet will inevitably hit one of the innocents – they get in the way a hell of a lot – when a bullet does connect, you’ll lose health, represented by a sheriff badge. We aren’t spoilt for choice with this type of game on the Switch, let alone other platforms, but regardless, this is a title definitely worth playing, and I think it takes the mantle of light gun games for me until Sega Ages attempt a H ouse of the Dead 2 port. However, I wanted to use the home button to check something quickly when I realised that the left Joy-Con doesn’t have that option. To be able to purchase content for Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family systems, your funds usable through the Nintendo Account must be merged with the funds tied to your Nintendo Network ID. After being stuck in the game, I started using the right Joy-Con so that I could access the home button. However, I didn’t want both reticules on screen at the same time, unless I was playing with friends.
