About this deal

The middle is where it slowed and I thought the pacing was off BUT BUT BUT the last 25% was SO GOOD. It was full of plot twists and reveals AND ACTION! There are so many new avenues to explore heading into a book 2! I think overall the book just kept getting better and I do love when a YA feels truly YA and I could recommend this to all ages. You cannot – and I mean CANNOT – convince me that Emrys wasn’t whipped for Tamsin this entire book. He was W H I P P E D . And I loved it, because their banter was top level, and his adorable obsession with Tamsin was beyond fun to read about. Also, understandable Emrys, because Tamsin was freaking cool. She could be a little on the nose sometimes, but I loved her growth and stubborn personality, and her love for her brother just solidified my appreciation of her. Tamsin Lark is a hollower. She didn’t want to be. She’s a mortal with no magical powers, unlike her brother. However, her brother, Cabell, has a curse that turns him into a monster (sort of like a werewolf¿). Tamsin finds out that The ring of Dispel can break Cabell’s curse.

Their relationship didn’t feel like it built at all, and just jumped from “i tolerate you” to “oh goodness we’re hiding together in a very small space AHHHH touching” Silver in the Bone is the story of Tamsin, who was abandoned ten years ago by her foster father, and now only has her brother as a company while they both work breaking into crypts and tombs in search of treasures. When they have a chance to get something that could save her brother's life, and give them some hint about what happened with their guardian, they take it, without knowing all the dark secrets that are expecting for them. I also found the world quite hard to be enveloped in...I was looking for that completely immersed feeling, and I didn’t get it. Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children’s/ Knopf Books for Young Readers for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.Let me just say that I am BLOWN AWAY and screaming crying dying for the second book ASAP. Literal tears were falling down my cheeks in rage and misery by the end of this book (I may have gotten a wee bit attached to a character or two… whoops). And maybe I’m being dramatic, but I certainly adored this book. This book!! This book!! I am obsessed and in love with Silver in the Bone! It was absolutely incredible! Trust comes deeply through this novel. As the story progresses Tamsin has to work together with her arch-rival, Emrys, who is known for his infamous Cunningfolk father, so it seems ‘obvious’ that he would follow in his father’s footsteps. However, despite their differences, they both have one goal which is to find the famous ring. Neve and Emrys The characters are properly done, all with their personalities and stories that made them very unique and interesting. However, the story makes something to one character that didn't resonate with me when it happened... but apart from that, I can say I connected with Tamsin and company most of the time.

The setting was a bit hard to define. It has the feel of the traditional fantasy setting, but it also seems like it is in the present, so I was a bit confused with that aspect of the story. I think I didn’t expect it to be an urban fantasy going in, so it threw me off a bit. I liked the lore and mythology, the magic and curses, and a lot of the other fantasy elements, even though there were some inconsistencies and some parts confused me, but the world-building was clunky. We are thrown right into the story with little information or context, which I didn’t enjoy, especially because the start was so slow. Later, there were a few passages that felt like info dumps, but some others left me confused and questioning. I know people have hot takes when it comes to urban fantasy, but i've always really enjoyed it. I love how the characters were slowly introduced and as you go...you grasp the world building right alongside the main character. The search for mythical objects and the fight to break a deadly curse was done really well. Tamsin Lark didn’t ask to be a Hollower. As a mortal with no magical talent, she was never meant to break into ancient crypts, or compete with sorceresses and Cunningfolk for the treasures inside. But after her thieving foster father disappeared without so much as a goodbye, it was the only way to keep herself—and her brother, Cabell—alive. Which everyone should read because I have never smiled giggled and screamed and laughed so much in one scene omg Ten years later, rumors are swirling that her guardian vanished with a powerful ring from Arthurian legend. A run-in with her rival Emrys ignites Tamsin’s hope that the ring could free Cabell from a curse that threatens both of them. But they aren’t the only ones who covet the ring. One character who doesn’t get much limelight but is still important is Neve. I enjoyed Neve’s character and connection with Tamsin because she is good-natured and willing to open up. Upon joining Tamsin, Emrys, and Cabell on their quest, she brings out open-mindedness and helps Tamsin get out of her shell. Many questions are unanswered and people to stay wary of, but she sets the goal to study up and find her inner power all while facing the unknown. But she's not the only Hollower who covets the ring and Tamsin is forced into an alliance with the last person she can trust, her rival Emrys. Together, they must journey from underground Boston to the cursed ruins of Avalon, where a secret is waiting to be exposed that has the power to awaken ghosts of the past and shatter Tamsin's only hope of saving her brother . . . I can at least be brave enough to tell you. I can tell you that to me, you’ve always felt like spring. Like possibility. I admire you, and respect you, and I want to be near you as long as I can. As long as you’ll let me be.”

Silver in the Bone: from the bestselling author of Lore

ARC copy provided in exchange for an honest review. This in no way changes my rating or review. Quotes copied from ARC. The characters also made it hard to get through...I didn’t like them for a large portion of the book. I am a huge fan of fantasy and romance. This was more adventure and mystery than romance, but I was drawn to the nuances of the enemies-to-lovers trope. What stood out to me that was devastatingly strong was Tamsin and Cabell’s relationship as orphaned siblings. They were under the ‘care’ of a guardian who is a treasure thief. Although their bond is strong through troubled times, it is obvious how they’ve become different as their vulnerability shows throughout the novel.

Silver in the Bone

As a human with no magic, she never thought she’d be breaking into crypts and fighting sorceresses. Not because that was what I was made to read, or because that was the books we had, because I loved them. The problem with siblings, I decided, was that they spent years gathering up all these little knives of observation and learning exactly where to slip them between your bones. My favorite part of the story is the amazing enemies-to-lovers romance between Tamsin and Emery. Oh my word, do these two have chemistry! Their banter, the push and pull between them, and the way they fight their feelings before eventually succumbing to them are fantastic. I can’t wait to see what happens between them, and I have a feeling there is way more to Emery than meets the eye. His character is shrouded in mystery, and I am really questioning his actions and motives at this point, so I’m eager to see how his story and his romance with Tamsin play out.
