Reading Marcus du Sautoy’s “The Music of the Primes” and Simon Singh’s “Fermat’s Last Theorem” has shown how individuals have dedicated their lives to solving seemingly simple problems. The main attraction of these books and mathematics more widely, is problem solving, which is also what draws me to engineering. Solving a wide variety of problems is something I really enjoy; in the most recent UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, I was awarded a gold certificate, also the best score in my year at school. It looks and feels like a textbook, but it is peppered with excerpts from current students, tutors at the university and heads of colleges on what they have seen and would like to see in their interviews. Financial loss In sixth form, I have had the most thought-provoking lessons in Further Mathematics, where I found the Mechanics and Further Pure modules especially fascinating. The idea that complicated concepts such as matrices had applications in computing, or projectile motion calculations in sport, tied mathematics to real-life situations, which only increased my curiosity about the subject. Even as a young child, the thrill of overcoming a problem was one I relished, no matter how long it took. Mathematics, as alluring and flawless as it may seem, is full of problems, hence I was swiftly drawn into the subject. Towards the end of my final year in junior school, I realised the challenges set in school alone were not enough to quench my thirst, and began seeking logic puzzles elsewhere. While our video solutions and in-person courses will give you all of the mathematical tools and insight you need, how do you know if you’re applying them correctly when working independently? You will be given a complete debrief from the tutor after each interview, so you can practise acting on their advice in the next. With admissions now so competitive, you can’t afford to fall behind on any part. A successful Oxbridge application can have so many parts – personal statement, admissions test, interview, A-level performance… you’ll want to make sure you get the most out of the precious time you have.An Oxbridge Physics interview (for Physics at Oxford or Physical Natural Sciences at Cambridge) will put completely new demands on your ability to analyse physical situations, apply advanced mathematics to them, and communicate your ideas to a tutor all the while. Are your solutions presented logically? Have you got any gaps in your solutions which could lose you vitally important marks? Have you misused symbols or forgotten some key information on your diagram? An underlying theme throughout the book is how ability, passion and potential is being sought in a successful candidate and how to display these three qualities throughout the application process be it the exams, the interviews or any experience that a candidate embarks on.

If you have a child in years 11 or 12 likely to do well/ or having done well in their GCSEs then this book is well worth your time. Although principally aimed at those planing on studying sciences including medicine and the more mathematical subjects such as economics there is much good advice here for any student in lower 6th (year 12).
