About this deal

Funny about death, real about anxiety, witty about the things that worry us the most, with the most endearing kind-hearted cast of characters.

I worried that this must have made me a bad person to find so much of the story, the narration, and the events hilarious. However, there is a serious side to the book, and that might deter readers who prefer their fiction to be light and airy. I’m sure that this book will go far, particularly as it makes you emphasize with someone who is suffering from a severe mental illness.

The interplay between queerness and mental health is a rich palette for painting a narrative, and through Gilda’s eyes, Austin lets us all feel the push and pull of what we know and what we think we know about ourselves and the world around us.

In doing so, Austin provides the reader with a birds-eye-view of what it is like to be anxious and depressed. I thought for sure when I picked this book up it would be right up my alley as and I would be able to relate to the main character's struggles with anxiety issues. A: This relationship served in part to represent mental health stigma, particularly in terms of how members of older generations sometimes approach mental health, and to illustrate the negative impacts of that. Overall, the story wasn’t what I thought it would be, meaning it really wasn’t what I signed up for, so I was disappointed. This book is a snowball of mundane things, everyday misunderstandings, and small cruelties that add and add until it is nearly impossible not to see some sort of reflection of your own life in it.They leave her unable to do dishes or shower, they cause her to obsess over things she can’t control (like the missing cat), and they often cause her to break into tears or have panic attacks at inconvenient times. The suggested questions are intended to help your reading group find new and interesting angles and topics for your discussion. I would be lying if I said I loved this book but I did like Gilda as a character and I enjoyed going on her journey with her. Gilda might be an accidental Catholic, a lapsed lesbian, and an inept receptionist, but she’s awfully good at helping us reckon—hilariously, tenderly—with our impending deaths. Desperate for relief from her anxious mind and alienated from her repressive family, she responds to a flyer for free therapy at a local church and finds herself abruptly hired to replace the deceased receptionist Grace.

She can't remember when she has showered and she loses her latest job because she forgets to go to work.A: One reason I like reading is because it helps me develop empathy for others and learn from other people’s experiences.
