About this deal

In the 24 set of Derwent Graphitint, 19 of them are rated 6 and above, which is an excellent ratio in my opinion. Unless specified, offers and vouchers are not valid on products which are already discounted from RRP, gift vouchers, books and from the I LOVE ART range. Apply these paints on NOT (Cold Pressed) watercolour paper to bring out beautiful granulation and passages of tone and colour. In terms of the set itself, it comes in exactly the same kind of box as the Inktense pan sets, including a sponge, a waterbrush and five mixing areas inside the lid. I don't normally list the colours in my written reviews, mainly because I can review sets that have 120 colours in them.

The colours included in this set are Port, Juniper, Aubergine, Dark Indigo, Steel Blue, Ocean Blue, Slate Green, Green Grey, Meadow, Russet, Autumn Brown, Graphite Grey.

Used dry, Graphitint provides just a hint of colour but adding water literally transforms the tint into rich, vibrant colour.

The Derwent Graphitint pan set would make a fun and interesting gift for an artistic friend or family member. Derwent Graphitint Pencils have the same properties in terms of hardness and solubility in water as Derwent's popular 4B Watersoluble Sketching Pencil, so you can experiment with adding colour but retain all the familiar qualities of your favourite graphite pencil.

The core is deceptively dancing with a 4mm shaft of pigment, the reasons for my vague description will become clear during the performance section of this review. The pencils themselves are well proportioned with an amble 8mm, excellent quality, Cedar wood barrel. I also found it was best to let the colours completely dry before applying another layer over the top as the hardness of the pencil can scrape the underlayers away. Derwent Graphitint combines the drama and creativity of a graphite pencil with a hint of soft, subtle colour. Other colours were added to the edges of the wings creating a layering process of wet/dry applications until I got the right amount of detail and colour strength.

The leads are darker dry than when they are wet and creating a home made colour chart showing both dry and wet colour tones is a huge help. Although the range is small, as I have mentioned, all good things come in small packages, or in this version of the saying, all good things come in small quantity. Graphitint will appeal to artists looking for something a little bit different but with all the familiar qualities of their favourite graphite pencils. The same goes for the white pencil but always ensure the painting is fully dry before applying dry pencil applications to avoid scratching the surface as already mentioned. With only 24 colours in the range, it is difficult to find the right one especially for this stunning Red-legged Honeycreeper as there is only the Ocean blue colour in the set that comes close to the blues on this bird and that was quite a muted tone.A round 8mm diameter pencil with a 4mm strip that has the same physical properties as an 8B Watersoluble Sketching Pencil with the added versatility of coloured pigment. It's available in a range of 24 subtle shades, from soft greys, blues and greens to glowing russets, plums and browns. Derwent as a company are producing some of the most versatile products on the market at the minute, the Drawing and Graphitint ranges may not have a large number of colours in their sets, but the colours they do have will be difficult to find in other sets, making them a unique brand of pencils. A few years ago I purchased a tin of Derwent Graphitint pencils being a fan of graphite pencils I thought it was such a great concept to add a hint of colour to my graphite drawings using these pencils. Developed especially for water-soluble pencils, this smooth paper is perfect for all water-soluble media.

I found that all of the colours had significant granulation when applied to watercolour paper, which makes for interesting effects, but can be challenging if you wanted some completely smooth areas of colour. It may not have quite the same versatility of the Graphitint pencils – which can be left dry to provide only the slightest hint of colour or wet to become more vibrant – but what it lacks in that regard, it makes up for in portability. Unfortunately, and I use the term unfortunately due to the delectable colour palette, there are only twenty four colours in the Derwent Graphitint range. These pans contain graphite, so it makes sense that they sparkle in a similar manner (though not as pronounced) to other pearlescent or metallic paints that contain mica or light-reflecting pigments.I’ve not conducted my own lightfastness test with the pans yet, but the tests I did with some of the pencils showed about half the colour saturation lost within 7 days of starting my test (with the charts pinned to my front window) and the colour was completely gone after a month, so it’s safe to assume a test with the pans would have a similar outcome.
