About this deal

The success rate is related to using the mouth for auto-inflation instead of the nose, which was the only described method previously, and by creating auto-inflation games adapted to the age and collaboration of the child to make it fun. Adding a pump also allows for gradual pressure increase without the active collaboration of the child. Most children have no problems after surgery. Discharge and infection are the most common complications. Rarely, a condition called tympanosclerosis occurs in which a chalky sort of substance develops in the eardrum. This is a scar on the ear drum and it usually does not cause any long-term problems. Approximately 200,000 children per year in the UK either attend GPs or are seen in the community per year with OME. There is a four in five chance a child will get an ear effusion in the first 10 years of their life. Try to avoid your child diving or jumping into the water as this increases the outside pressure and forces water through the grommet into the middle ear.

Which symptoms should I be looking for?

they have Down's syndrome or a cleft lip and palate, as glue ear is less likely to get better by itself Another parent agreed " my son was quite shy to do it at first. But when we got home of course it's like a new toy so he was all over it" The Otovent may be helpful for some older children during the watchful waiting period or while waiting for grommet surgery.

The Otovent is suitable for children from three years old. It consists of a balloon and a nosepiece. This treatment involves fitting the balloon to the nosepiece, putting the nosepiece against one nostril and keeping the other nostril and mouth closed. By blowing through the nostril, the balloon is inflated until it’s about the size of a grapefruit. The nosepiece is removed and the procedure repeated with the other nostril. However, children most often aren’t aware of their hearing loss. Instead, you may notice that your child asks for the volume to be turned up on the TV or tablet, or their teachers may notice that they aren’t paying attention in class.

Treatment of glue ear

One study (n=85) reported significant improvement in middle ear function, as assessed by tympanometry and pneumatic otoscopy, at 1, 2 and 3 months in those using Otovent with a compliance of more than 70% when compared with the control group. Older children with glue ear may also report tinnitus (hearing sounds in the affected ear like ringing or buzzing). Some may experience mild clumsiness or balance problems.

You can prevent your child from getting glue ear by reducing their risk of ear infections. Ways to reduce your child’s chances of developing an ear infection include:

Living with grommets

Parents of a 6 year old boy said: " He did struggle to start with, but it wasn't long before he could get it to an orange " The use of a simple nasal balloon can help restore hearing in children aged 4 to 11 with glue ear. After 3 months, this non-surgical treatment restored normal hearing to 49.6% of children with glue ear compared with 38.3% receiving usual care. Children inflate the balloon by blowing it up with their noses rather than their mouths. The activity which is done three times a day can be taught by nurses in a GP surgery. Few non-surgical treatments exist for children with glue ear. Some, such as antibiotics, are used despite evidence they don’t work. It is hoped using the nasal balloon may help reduce this unnecessary use of antibiotics and reduce the number of children requiring surgery, the last choice for symptoms persisting past three months. Long-term follow-up studies after grommet insertion show a high rate of recurrence of glue ear, increased risk of a permanently perforated eardrum, and a high chance of hearing loss in the higher frequencies in later life. Good quality, digital hearing aids are available free of charge for all children on the NHS. Your child may also be offered a bone conduction hearing device.

Their purpose is to provide objective information on device and diagnostic technologies to aid local decision-making by clinicians, managers and procurement professionals. By making this information available, NICE helps to avoid the need for NHS organisations to produce similar information for local use. You may be able to treat your child’s glue ear at home. Glue ear exercises you can have your child try to temporarily clear their middle ear include: Valsalva maneuverIf your child has had glue ear for more than 3 months, they may be referred to a specialist for hearing tests. Rarely, long-term glue ear may lead to middle ear damage and some permanent hearing loss. Can glue ear be prevented? Clean the nose piece with mild detergent after use. Rinse the nose piece with clean water. Discard used balloons when they have been inflated 20 times. Storage
