You must use the correct filter for each use. For dry use, fit the paper dust bag to the inlet fitting on the inside of the drum and make sure that the correct filter is in place for dry use. For wet use, remove the paper dust bag and use the foam filter over the float cage. Make sure you remove the dry use filter first. However, it took some time, overheated a little, and I found the motor to be louder than other models.
