Multiple intelligent recording modes are available, including Auto, Manual and Smart recording modes. Each can be used for creating a customised sound recording The Intelligent Auto mode can automatically adjust sound levels dynamically, while the Manual mode allows for fine-tuning of the recording levels to match the audio source volume. Smart recording assists in achieving the optimum sound level, this is set by listening to the environment before recording.
The bright sound mode has been created and designed for optimal voice recording, this can be ideal for use when recording podcasts, or any spoken word. Speaking of that, I've found the card slot slightly hit and miss. When that happens, it switches to internal recording. This works fine (it has a usable 16GB of internal flash, I think) but it can give you a scary moment when you pop the card out and don't find any of your recordings. In the box with the review unit were two rechargeable Ni‑MAAA batteries, a multilingual Basic Manual and a micro USB to USB‑A 2.0 adaptor. The LS‑P4 used only one battery, and the idea here is to allow longer running time when using Bluetooth (and longer still when not). The batteries are rechargeable and came fully charged — the device itself acts as a USB‑powered battery charger, which is a nice touch — and I like that spare batteries are cheap and readily available. OM System kindly sent their WJ2 wind jammer and a foam carry/storage pouch to help with testing, though these are not included in the price. There’s support for up to 2TB micro‑SD XC Type 1 cards, and while no card is supplied, there is 16GB of storage built in so you have everything you need to get up and running. The self-noise is present but not terrible. It's no Sony D100, at least with the onboard mics. Maybe with very sensitive externals, the situation would improve, I haven't tried that yet, as nature ambience isn't my primary use case. The LS-P5 has both Slate Tone and Test Tone available when used as a camera microphone. Slate Tone sends a reference signal to your digital camera for easier editing, while Test Tone enables you to set the camera audio recording levels. Some remote control features are included courtesy of Bluetooth connectivity, with users able to remotely start and stop recording, as well as adjust levels, change filter settings or microphone directionality via a free iOS and Android-compatible smartphone app. When using 16-bit recording modes, it is also possible to use the Bluetooth connection to wirelessly monitor the audio signal at distances of up to 10m. The pre-recording mode can be ideal when trying to capture audio of bird songs or lectures. The 2-second pre-record helps to reduce the effect of control lag which could lead to some sound being lost at the start of your audio clip. A long press of the red Record button enters Smart mode, in which the LS‑P5 will automatically set the preamp gain for you.Bluetooth connectivity isn’t new per se, but it’s improved: the LS‑P5 has Version 5.0 support, which in lay terms means it now allows both headphone and app connection at the same time, which previously was not possible.
