About this deal

A great tool that will support our kids’ (or students’) choices is a set of Coping Cards. What are Coping Cards (or Calming Cards)? The illustrations are by the renowned illustrator Laurie Stansfield who from a young age was immersed in the organising ideas that underpin human givens knowledge and skills. Listen to the Innovative Resources Podcast interview with Katie Jardine, illustrator of Anxiety Solutions for Kids, about the illustrations, messages, and techniques used in the card set. We hang a card each week at our sink in the office and we look at it while we fill the kettle. When we put this card up I could hear my colleague in the kitchen repeatedly saying ‘Thank you’ in all different voices and volumes—to the universe. It was great!’ An action, a series of actions, or a thought process used in meeting a stressful or unpleasant situation or in modifying one’s reaction to such a situation. Coping strategies typically involve a conscious and direct approach to problems, in contrast to defense mechanisms.

Each of the four cards in this set contains a helpful instruction for a calming action (for example, "Take deep breaths") as well as a colourful illustration demonstrating how that action should be done. Secondly, the “needs model of well-being” is just one of the fundamental organising ideas that underpins the human givens approach– and they have real data from thousands of people showing that this is an effective approach to well-being. Anxiety Freedom Cards is a well-being resource designed to assist those helping to improve the lives of individuals, strengthen relationships and improve productivity within teams. Each one of the anxiety cards represents an innate human needs or resources. The beautiful and thought-provoking images invite you to embark on an inward search for meaning and relevance relating to each of the key ideas. This process provides an insightful way to evaluate life situations, choices and environments in terms of how well your innate resources are being used and how well your innate needs are met. Viewing things from this perspective helps to clarify what might be prioritised to reduce stress and improve well-being. These Coping Cards have been created by VerySpecialTales.com / The pictograms used are property of the Aragon Government (Spain) and have been created by Sergio Palao to ARASAAC which distribute them under Creative Commons License (BY-NC-SA) The strategy we choose will obviously be influenced by the type of problem we face and our own coping skills.

If the standard version of these 'Stay Calm' cards does not quite suit you or your students, be sure to take a look at the alternative versions we also have available. More 'Stay Calm' cards and other resources Practice the proposed activities when your kids are calm and happy. You will not be able to teach them to “stop, think and solve” (just an example) in the middle of a tantrum. This is my favourite because it fights against perfectionist tendencies and really focusses on strengths. It’s a great reminder that the challenge we face currently is surmountable, and even if it’s hard now, we are constantly growing and learning!

they are conveniently presented in a card format, so they are easy to carry around and you can access them when you need them Some people prefer to call them calming cards, calm down cards, calming strategy cards,orself-regulation cards. Emotion-focused coping strategies, that involve our efforts to mitigate the emotional consequences of stressful events. In other words, dealing with our emotions and feelings instead of the problem itself.

Ways to help manage stress and anxiety

This is my favourite because people can sometimes get into a panic when feeling anxious and everything can seem to speed up and ‘close in’. This strategy helps an anxious person to slow things down. And by saying things really slowly, it gives you more of a chance to breathe deeply and/or calmly as you do so. Thirdly, a recent peer reviewed article: Developing a student led school mental health strategy by Cathy Atkinson and six others references the use of the in8 Cards as a creative tool used in their work. This is a series of videos that gives plenty of suggestions for getting started with the cards so that you can start using them straight away. Firstly, I would point out that recent cross cultural studies have endorsed the idea that human have basic needs (the original work of Abraham Maslow). Interestingly, these studies did not support that idea that there is always a hierarchy as in the well-known pyramid of needs that is in nearly every psychology textbook. they improve the chances of successfully implementing strategies we have been practicing with them, by providing visual prompts
