About this deal

They have long, bushy tails with alternating red and white rings. The tail helps them maintain their balance as they climb trees. Long, sharp claws help them climb to the highest branches to sunbathe or escape from predators, according to the San Diego Zoo. Watch the amazing red panda documentary below to see footage of the animal in the wild, or continue reading for in-depth info on the species … These claws are quite deadly body parts for a creature as peaceful as a red panda. However, these creatures need these claws to do many things. The behavior of a red panda varies throughout the year according to climate, the abundance of food, and the presence of cubs. These normally solitary creatures are nocturnal and are most active between dusk and dawn. These furs cover all over their bodies to even under their feet. They replace the paw pads they don’t have on the sole of their feet.

That’s right! These creatures don’t just have teeth but sharp ones. Just like their claws, their teeth are part of their carnivorous features. In addition, different colors of furs make up their body color. The main color is the reddish reddish-brown fur that covers almost all parts of their bodies. These pouches are common to marsupials – mammals with pouches. Red pandas are placental mammals and give birth to fully developed babies. Placental mammals don’t need pouches. Red pandas are considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the organization that determines the conservation status of plant and animal species. While no one knows the exact number of animals in the wild, a 2015 estimate put the population at 10,000, a 50 percent drop since 1997. Red pandas are classified as carnivores because they're descended from the same ancestors as other carnivores but their diet consists mainly of bamboo. They evolved from Simocyon batalleri or the “short-snouted dog"! This carnivorous, tree-dwelling relative of the red panda was about the size of a mountain lion and lived in the late Miocene and early Pliocene era. Fossils of the Simocyon have been found in Europe, Asia, and North America. 7. Red Panda's Have Six Digits on their Front Paws

If 90 percent of your diet is made up of bamboo leaves, it could seem like you lost a bet. But bamboo is a pretty practical food source, as it grows rapidly on mountainsides, and few other species are going to fight you for this low-calorie resource. Red pandas eat mostly bamboo leaves and shoots, acorns, and flowers. Bamboo stalks are eaten in the spring and fruit is enjoyed in the summer. They may also eat eggs, small birds, and small rodents.

Eating a specialized diet like bamboo happens to be very unusual among mammals. In fact, only a few depend mostly on bamboo for their food: red pandas, giant pandas, bamboo lemurs from Madagascar, and bamboo rats from China and Southeast Asia. Red pandas might spend about half of their waking hours foraging for bamboo.
