About this deal

Align your expectations correctly, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the SNK809. There aren’t Rolex or Patek levels of case finishing, accuracy, or movement decoration, but that’s not the point here. And the most important part, in line with the watch’s ethos, is that it is reliable and sturdy. It has a power reserve of about 40 hours. The general design of the watch isn’t exactly screaming for attention. It’s nice, just not as nice looking as other watches in this price range

Plus, it offers better scratch resistance than regular mineral crystal, which is commonly used in this price range. Seiko SNK809 Movement With a water resistance of 99ft, you can confidently even go swimming or snorkeling with your automatic without a care in the world. Each hour marker is accented by a seconds counter that steps up by five for each hour, all the way to 60 seconds. That’s a classic pilot’s watch feature, and though it makes the SNK809’s dial much busier, it fits within the overall aesthetic. Wikipedia’s example of what 30m water resistance offers you in ‘suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, water related work and fishing.’ The thing with water resistance testing is that it’s done in a still environment with no added pressure. The Seiko 5 SNK809 is one of the most popular watches from Seiko. It is loved and appreciated by watch enthusiasts and regular watch-wearers alike. If you are looking for an affordable automatic mechanical watch, there are not many better alternatives than the SNK809.The SNK809 carries a military vibe overall that lands somewhere between a classic pilot’s watch and a rugged field watch, though the dial markings tilt further in the pilot direction. Outside of that, you have a fairly standard chapter ring, featuring relatively small numbers along with tiny lume pips that mark each hour. A slim white circle houses the rest of the text, including the applied Seiko logo at the typical central position, with the famous Seiko 5 shield placed immediately below it. I’m not normally a fan of the ‘5’ logo, though I’ll admit it looks quite good on this watch. It’s well-sized and suits the colourway rather nicely. Night time visibility on this Seiko never really gets as much credit as it should; it’s pretty good!

The indices have lumed dots on their outer edge, and their placement on the outside of the dial means there’s room for the date window and a lume dot for better nighttime visibility. Doing so might require you to service your watch more often, but the cool cred you’ll get when pairing your Seiko with your speedos will more than make up for it, right? The Movement Photography by Jacques Elliott Regardless of whether history and heritage are important to you, there are plenty of factors that make the SNK809 a good watch that can serve you well today. The Seiko 5 SNK809 has a Hardlex hardened mineral crystal. Hardlex is more rugged than an acrylic crystal, which is what you might expect to find on a watch of this price. And while many people prefer sapphire crystals these days, Seiko’s proprietary Hardlex is a decent budget alternative. It’s less scratch-resistant than sapphire but also a bit more shatterproof. However, it’s generally not going to be as durable as sapphire in many situations. It seems that few watches are as fondly regarded as the humble Seiko 5 SNK809. Many watch enthusiasts can claim the SNK809 as their first mechanical watch. Often, it’s the watch that started them in the hobby of watch collecting. Owning this little Seiko 5 almost seems like a rite of passage, of sorts. The case diameter is 36mm so it’s fairly smaller than these 42mm watches you see around. So for people who’ve had enough of large watches not sitting right for them, give this watch a chance. That’s not at all what we have here, and though I’ve passed over it on my watch searches many times, I can say now that I’d give it more than a second glance if I see it again.
