About this deal

Look after your ears, a little bit of research can be very valuable, and it never hurts to ask why Peltor are world leaders in this field!

Being a rifle shooter meant I could be a little more generous with the actual size of the defenders, and given my positive experiences of the use of Peltor units, I naturally looked there first... and last. Peltor’s SportTacs are a great unit that I still wear for hunting, but I wanted to go above 30dB of SNR. Health and safety guidelines state that from 100-105dB, 30+ is recommended, and you can see where this is going; we are noisy buggers, us shooters. Thankfully, out in the open, we don’t get too much reflection of sound, and it is mainly produced in intermittent bangs, rather than continuous noise, but given that I was getting a slight ringing noise in my ears every now and again, and a very slight continuous hiss, it was clear that damage was being done. The waterproofing on the battery compartment and optional gel earseals are an excellent bonus for people who’ll be wearing them for a long time whilst out in the elements. Thankfully we’re all much more aware of the need to protect ourself today because a shoot day can be very noisy. Most 12-bore gunshots produce a sound of around 150 to 160 decibels (db), while a .30-06 rifle with a 24in barrel produces around the same. Consistent exposure to sounds of more than 95db is bad, and noises of more than 120db can cause permanent damage to your hearing in seconds. Read our piece on why you should always wear ear defenders when shooting. Peltor are well-regarded for their hearing protection products. They produce hearing protection for a whole variety of fields, including workplace safety as well as firearm safety.A. Different horses for different courses. When you need to be easily visible, put the bright shells on, but when you want to hidden, put the dark sheels on. Find out how the 3M Peltor SportTac Electronic Ear Defenders perform in this review… Specifications These are particularly good for rifle shooters – the ear protectors are shaped to work with a rifle butt. Offering 35dB noise reduction. Mark Heath says: “Clay shooting, I usually wear non- electronic Peltor ear defenders often with foam plugs in addition. I can then take the ear defenders off and have a conversation with just the foam plugs in.” BUY NOW They don’t offer more hearing protection than regular ‘passive’ ear defenders, but they amplify quieter sounds such as conversation and sounds of birds and wildlife, which is very useful when shooting. This allows the user to keep their hearing protected whilst communicating at the range or listening for noises whilst hunting.

Mark Heath, Instruction Manager at West London Shooting School agreed: “When teaching I prefer electronic ear defenders normally Peltor Sportac, these give excellent protection and enable conversation to continue with clients. When game shooting I will often wear the Sportacs. Given that I am around shooting most day of the week I consider it important to protect and to wear appropriate protection to try and preserve my hearing. Some of our older clients who didn’t wear protection in their early shooting years are invariably suffering from some hearing loss.”Another downside to ear plugs is that they are very easy to lose and need to be replaced regularly, whereas ear defenders can be used again and again.
