Unfortunately, the Rigel Enduro isn’t intuitive to operate. I wasn’t able to just start using the light, and couldn’t access the Boost function without studying the instruction manual first. Moon has judged the length of the cable well – it reaches from the hoods to the light while following the contours of the bar, so it'll sit nicely under the bar tape. Modes Where does it say in my post that I point it down? I aim it up the road to see where I am going and where the road goes. When did you use this particular light that you are running down, I would suspect that you have never tried it which, if that is the case, would make your points meaningless. You also get a wired remote control which connects to the light via the USB-C charging port. I've found that being able to change modes while keeping your hands on the hoods makes life a lot easier. I use the Ravemen PR1600 on my winter road bike, and being able to switch between dipped/high beam easily when interacting with oncoming traffic is great.

The button is a little on the small size, plus it is quite stiff which did make changing the modes a little bit of a faff on the fly.
In IO mode the light detects darkness and turns itself on – ideal for riding through heavily shaded areas or tunnels during the day, or if your commute starts in daylight and finishes in the dark or vice versa. It doesn't get fooled by artificial light either, so don't panic when you're cruising under streetlights.

However you should think about the sort of features that you’d expect when buying new Lights. It’s worth writing a list of the “must-have” features so that you don’t end up compromising and missing some important features, or alternatively end up buying an unnecessarily high specced product. The Moon Rigel Max is a very clever light, with an Intelligent Operation mode, a VLS mode that allows you to control the lumen output, and a power-off when it detects no movement. Basically, it's customisable. Even the battery life is decent considering the illumination on offer, although, as I found with its 1,000-lumen sibling, the Rigel Pro, I'm not exactly blown away by the anti-dazzling lens. Considering the output, the battery life is pretty impressive. It's not that big a light unit either so it hasn't got a whopping battery. Using the full 1,500 lumens you'll get 1hr 40mins, while the 500 lumens will last for 3hrs 30mins. The flashing modes give anything from 48hrs up to 120hrs. For instance, 1,500 lumens is overkill for a lot of road conditions, so you could tweak the brightest mode down to, say, 1,000 lumens for most rides, or even 800 lumens – almost doubling your battery life. You can actually take the brightness down to a minimum of just 20 lumens, which'll give you up to 56 hours' burn-time.

Once the way it works is imprinted into your mind, operation isn’t hugely challenging, though.
