Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight. Jamie freed himself from the cock-pit and clambered to the wing where he stood until the aircraft was only fifteen feet from the ground, with the plane descending rapidly. Undergoing over 50 operations, he was able to pull through but, for Jamie, life as he knew it was over: “I couldn’t see a life beyond injury, I couldn’t see that road ahead. Until one day when I woke up after having a dream of me posting to my Instagram saying I’d just landed the best trick in the world, and I knew from that morning it would be possible.

The group was a mix of ages, male and female, all were burn survivors, or had experienced traumatic scarring themselves. Jamie spoke to a group of the The Katie Piper Foundation’s beneficiaries in May 2013 about his experiences as a burns survivor. He competed at the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014 and has taken part in intensive winter sports training in Vancouver, which included Nordic skiing and ice sledge hockey. Joining the Help for Heroes Band of Brothers fellowship network in 2011 gave Jamie the platform he needed to turn his life around: “I had lost all belief in myself. Through extraordinary mental strength and determination Jamie has gone a long way to re-building his life.Seeing my skin healing before my very eyes, I was experiencing some sort of low-grade religious experience,' he wrote. Jamie has also launched a book, Life on a Thread, about how he fought back from the brink of death, and created a new and profoundly meaningful life from the wreckage of his experience.
