I expected this book to be good, and I was familiar with the characters and significance because of the miniseries. After a brief rest in Mourmelon, France, Easy Company went to fight in the Ardennes, where they served as part of the ring defense around the city of Bastogne, a crucial site for the Battle of the Bulge.

Taylor, former Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division, then attached to the XXI Corps, agreed. They invaded Normandy on D-Day, the Netherlands in Market Garden, fought in Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, liberated a Concentration Camp, and were one of the first to the Eagle's Nest, Berchtesgaden. There are some things in life that can only ever be expressed in one way - silence - a deep and anguished silence that cries primievally in disbeilieving defiance.

Because of this I did not make the same emotional connection to the book and its characters as I did with the miniseries. In college, I devoted a second date to watching an episode in my dorm room (there was no third date, but who needed dates when I had Ron Livingston and Donnie Wahlberg saving the world). The timeline and events depicted in the series stay fairly true to the book, showing the birth of the legendary Easy Company as it goes through basic training, enters the war and fights through an almost endless array of seemingly impossible missions until the European theater came to a close. When you watch two hours and still aren't quite sure who the main characters are, something is wrong.

In Band of Brothers Ambrose quoted liberally from Webster's unpublished diary entries, with permission from his estate. Ambrose follows the lives of this group of soldiers from their training in 1942, their deployments in Europe, and their lives after the war. When Band of Brothers was released as a Blu-Ray set, I bought that too, and watched it yet again, reveling in the high-definition clarity that – unfortunately – really demonstrated the fakeness of the Bastogne sets. This is more than military history the way it should be written: it is military history the way it can be written. As a final accuracy check, the veterans saw previews of the series and approved the episodes before they were aired. Liebgott leads a trio that tracks down and summarily executes a concentration camp commandant at a farm.
