Gardeners often use the word variety when referring to a specific plant, but the correct botanical term is 'cultivar'. Whichever word you use, it means a distinctive plant or plants, given a specific cultivar name and usually bred to enhance certain characteristics, such as flower or fruit size, colour, flavour or fragrance, plant size, hardiness, disease resistance, etc. Additionally, it is worth knowing that, botanically, variety has another meaning - it refers to a naturally-occurring distinct plant that only has slight differences in its looks. For example, Malva alcea var. fastigiata differs from typical plants by having an upright habit. cultivar with an eventual size that will suit your garden. Discussing fertilizer, this plant does best with a moderate application of fertilizer in the spring. I prefer a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. A little fertilizer goes a long way with this plant, so be careful not to overdo it. Too much fertilizer will result in lots of green growth with fewer flowers. About light From spring to early summer, large, soft-green leaves cover the upright stems, making the perfect foil for other, more colourful flowers. Then, from May onwards, the 'Little White Love' buds burst into huge clusters of beautiful snowy-white double blooms, smothering the tree from top to toe and releasing its delectable scent.

The showy Philadelphus Schneesturm is a German variety of the above-mentioned Philadelphus Virginal. In case you are looking for a highly decorative flowering shrub to be grown as a specimen, this cultivar is ideally suited for that role. With its maximum height and spread of 2.5 metres, Philadelphus Snow Storm is a match for both spacious and small gardens. This attractive shrub is loved for its profusion of heady pure white flowers that bloom from June through to July and good autumn colour. The arching stems look positively regal when the leaves turn to a hue of molten gold! Philadelphus Lemoinei Of course, they make a great addition to a white garden, but they also look good with blue flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus. In fact, their white blossoms go well with most colour combinations from cool blues and violets to hot reds and yellows. Pruning Advice

Choose healthy stems without any buds or flowers, then, with a clean sharp knife, or secateurs, cut off a stem about 4 inches long. Remove the lower third of the leaves from the stem, dip the stem in rooting hormone powder and put into the prepared holes so that about one third of the stem is beneath soil level. Firm the soil around the stems and mist the pots with water. Usually, the plant growth rate during the spring and summer when the weather is warm and there is plenty of rainfall. However, they can also grow well during the fall and winter if the conditions are right. They need a lot of sunlight to grow well, so they do best in areas that get plenty of sun. Common Problems This dwarf variety reaches a height of only 80 cm (31 inches) making it ideal for the smaller garden or for growing in a container. It produces an abundance of double creamy-white flowers and can tolerate most conditions including coastal situations. This shrub stays compact and neat and will rarely need any pruning. Philadelphus ‘Microphylluss’ All varieties of this evergreen shrub blossom profusely, most with double white flowers and yellow stamens. In mid to late summer the entire shrub will be covered with blooms. These blossoms are very attractive to bees and butterflies and so are a good choice if you wish to entice wildlife to your garden. Most varieties will flower from June to July, though some are a little later.

Little White Love' is fully hardy and prefers moist well-drained soil. Ensure you plant this beauty in a spot where your shrub will benefit from full sun or partial shade. It is an ideal plant for a large container on your patio, but make sure you position it near your house so that the gorgeous scent can drift into your home and be enjoyed indoors too. This Philadelphus also offers huge versatility working well in both a formal planting scheme and cottage style garden. Philadelphus 'Manteau d'Hermine' – a compact variety with double, pompon-like flowers. H x S: 75cm x 1.5m The spring foliage of the Philadelphus Coronarius Aureus emerges a bright yellow and then fades to a chartreuse green when mature. During the early summer months, it offers up a display of abundant white flowers that many says have a slight lemon fragrance. It grows to a height to 1 ½ metres but can be pruned to a smaller size. The Philadelphus Coronarius Aureus grows well in partial shade which makes the hardy shrub an excellent choice for a woodland garden. It grows well in areas up to a zone H-6 hardiness. Its toughness makes it well suited to coastal regions. Philadelphus Belle EtoilePropagation for Philadelphus 'Little White Love' is best done through softwood or semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer. Take cuttings that are around 5-8 inches long and make sure to remove any flower buds. Use a well-draining potting mix and make sure to keep the cuttings moist but not waterlogged. Once rooted, the Philadelphus 'Little White Love' can be transplanted into its permanent home. Growth Speed Philadelphus coronarius'Aureus' – the foliage of this philadelphus is a limey-golden green when young, giving it an added zing. Flowers are white and scented. Needs shelter from strong sun. As far as flower differences go, some are double or have coloured centres, but generally, the overwhelming impression is of a profusion of white blooms. Choose one that appeals most. If planting in a container, choose a medium to large pot depending on the variety chosen. Make sure you choose one of the more compact or dwarf varieties for best results. Container grown plants will need to be kept well-watered, especially in dry conditions. They will also benefit from an application of fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone, three times a year. MaintenanceYour Philadelphus should be moved to a larger container if its roots become overcrowded. Planting in a new, slightly larger pot will give the roots more space and allow for more soil around the roots which will help keep them moist and provide them with nutrients.
