Africa 3.0: Bakosó: Afrobeats de Cuba + Live Performance - Midlands Arts Centre - MAC - Birmingham

This screening explores the global obsession with the music phenomenon Afrobeat, which has brought joy, connections and influences from Lagos to London, US to Cuba and beyond. The two films will be followed by a live Afrobeat music performance from Stefanie Larmie.Bakosó: AfroBeats of Cuba What does Está Rico by Marc Anthony, Will Smith & Bad Bunny have in common with Made For Now by Janet Jackson x Daddy Yankee? They both high-jacked AfroBeats and did not give the genre’s origin props. Bakosó is a film that does the opposite, following DJ Jigüe to his hometown of Santiago de Cuba to find inspiration from the new sounds. He finds Afrobeats has helped create a new genre called Bakosó, which itself is beautiful proof that the exchange between Cuba and Africa did not end with the Transatlantic slave trade. Through stunning visuals and a score created by the founders of the genre, the film shows the technology, culture and landscape that shape this African-Caribbean fusion.Steffy LarmieBorn and raised in Ghana, West Africa as a child but lived in UK for about 20 years, Steffy Larmie brings an infusion of Western and African culture into her music. Her favourite quote is ‘'Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life" (Berthold Auerbach).Instagram/Twitter: @steffylarmieYouTube: Steffy LarmieThis screening is part of Africa 3.0 a touring package of films that shows obsession as represented in cinema from across the African continent and the diaspora, focused on joy, vanity and infatuation.
